Eight Things Your Cat Should Never Eat

Milk

All cat owners know their cats love milk, but is it alright to give your cat some? Most cats are generally lactose-intolerant, so their digestive systems cannot process dairy products. Giving your cat milk, cheese, or any other dairy products can be harmful to because it can upset their stomachs and lead to diarrhea. Many owners who have their cats use the bathroom outside never end up noticing this because they don’t see how their cats react afterwards.

Tuna

Just like milk, tuna is another kitty favorite. A little bit every once and awhile is ok for your cat, but don’t give them too much of a good thing. Tuna can become dangerous if it is given as a steady diet staple, especially if it has been prepared for humans.  It does not have all the necessary nutrients they need to stay healthy, so you could be looking at problems with malnutrition. Feeding them larger quantities can also lead to mercury poisoning, so you need to watch out for that too!

Dog Food

This is applicable to pet owners who have both cats and dogs. Keep your dog food away from your cat because dog food is simply not suitable for cats. A bite of it wouldn’t hurt your cat, but a steady diet of dog food can lead to malnourishment because it lacks certain proteins and fats that your cat needs.

A lot of Treats

Too much of anything is always a bad thing. Like humans, giving your cat too many treats can lead to obesity or other debilitating diseases. An overweight cat can face many difficulties in its later stages in life, so monitoring its weight and visiting the vet always helps.

Grapes or Raisins

Giving your pet grapes or raisins is never a good idea. Grapes and raisins have been found to cause kidney failure in cats, and although your cat may not show any negative signs after eating a grape or raisin, it is still not the best idea to feed these foods to them.

Alcohol

Just because a lot of humans enjoy a good bar crawl doesn’t mean it’s good for pets.  Just a tiny amount can lead to brain damage and liver problems so just avoid it all together.

Onions

They can actually break down the red blood cells which can lead to anemia.  Since there are many different types of foods containing various forms of onions (raw, cooked, dehydrated, powdered, etc) it is a good rule to check out the ingredients for anything you feed them.

Chocolate

The most dangerous would be your dark or unsweetened baking varieties, but any type of chocolate is extremely dangerous for cats to ingest.  We think it’s a treat that just helps to pad your waistline, but in cats the smallest amounts can cause seizures, tremors, abnormal heart beats, and even death.  Chocolate also contains caffeine which is another item you should never give to your cat.  Learn more about What To Avoid in Pet Food here.
