DIY Dog Food Dinner for Your Dog

Dog licking lips thinking about dog treat recipes and homemade dog food
Why should your dog settle for a normal bowl of food every night? Mix it up with some delicious variations on our classic favorites.  While they probably shouldn’t eat these for dinner EVERY night, it can be a fun treat for a special occasion or a holiday. This is just one of many homemade dog food recipes you can try!

PB&K (Peanut Butter and Kibble) Burrito!

Not everyone can make home cooked dog food from scratch. Instead, you can use the store-bought stuff with other fresher ingredients in any number of healthy dog food recipes! This one can be a fantastic treat for pets, but there are some guidelines you have to follow when making anything with peanut butter.

You need to check the ingredients to make sure that what they contain is safe. There is an ingredient out there called Xylitol (aka Sugar Alcohol) and it is being used as a substitute for sugar, and is used in some foods labeled as sugar-free products.  If you find this ingredient on the label, the peanut butter is NOT SAFE .

You can eat it, but it can be very harmful to your dog and cause serious health issues (we are talking call your vet immediately if ingested types of issues) so you should not feed it to your dog.  Another thing to keep in mind is that peanut butter contains fats and sugars.  So even though it may contain some healthy fats and other nutrients giving it out in large quantities can make the dog gain weight, best to keep it to a minimum and not an everyday thing.

Step One:

Spread a small amount of peanut butter on a flour tortilla, just enough for a light coating. (Hint: use the soft taco size not giant burrito size. For smaller dogs once you make the burrito cut it in half as this portion could be a bit much for them).

Step Two:

Add in some doggie dry kibbles, their favorite doggie biscuits, or any other tasty treat that is appropriate for your pet’s diet.

Mix and Match! You don’t have to just follow the PB&K recipe, there are a wide variety of foods that you can use to change up your pups tasty treat, including grain and flour free options.  Make sure to avoid salts, sugars, butter, and other seasonings.  Here are a some that we found that would make great burritos:
  • Ripe banana (also just happens to go perfectly with peanut butter!)
  • Apples (make sure that you remove all the seeds)
  • Blueberries
  • Watermelon
  • Oranges slices (no peel)
  • Cooked oatmeal
  • Cooked pumpkin puree (the plain kind without all the pie spices)
  • Cottage cheese
  • Plain yogurt (also a good substitute for the peanut butter)
  • Baby carrots
  • Sweet potato
  • Rice
  • Low fat cheeses
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Green beans
  • Cooked ground beef
  • Cooked chicken
  • Cooked salmon
When cooking for your pets it is best to follow food prep guide lines just like you would preparing your own foods.  These dog treat recipes are also meant to be made in moderation and as a special treat, not a nightly one.  Before going all in with the burrito fest it is best to try with a small amount of each food and watch for any adverse reactions and if you see any contact your vet asap.  Always consult with your vet as to what is best for your dog.  Just like people, they can have allergies to certain items, or other dietary needs that might differ from the norm so certain foods on this list might not be best for them.

Editor's Note: Your dog might not mind making a mess, but the clean-up crew (you!) might! So make sure you feed on a surface you don’t mind getting messy or that is easy to clean.  You can also put it in their bowl or lay a towel down.
