Bug Warden Seals the Dreaded Bug Gap

The problem

A patio pet door for your sliding glass door is a simple, quick and easy solution to adding a pet door to your home. No muss, no fuss and, usually, no messy installation to worry about.

One problem is that when you open the slider for ventilation, the screen doesn't shut against the pet door. It only comes up even with the pet door and leaves a gap between the screen and the pet door.  It may be just a strip of vinyl, but don't discount bug warden in it's ability to keep all those unwanted bugs out!

It's obviously important to keep bugs out of the house. But until now, nobody has come up with a good way of solving this problem.

Introducing the "Bug Warden™"

Here are the answers to your questions:

  • What's the bug gap?

Patio pet doors provide a great way to provide pet access next to your existing sliding doors. Once installed, the screen door should not be shut all the way or pet door access is blocked. Until the Bug Warden TM arrived, the only option was to close the screen door to the point where the patio pet door starts, leaving a bug gap between the edge of the partially opened screen door up to 3" wide by over 6 feet tall...over 200 square inches of mosquito, fly and other pest access.
  • How does the Bug Warden work?

The Bug Warden blocks bugs from entering the bug gap by adhering to the side of the exterior face of the patio pet door and extending out a soft flexible material to provide a bug blocking seal with your screen door.
  • Is it easy to install?

Yes. There is no drilling into the screen door or pet door and no hacksaw required. Simply remove the adhesive backing, press to install the Bug Warden and finish with the screen door bumper at the top of the sliding rail to ensure an optimal seal every time you close the screen door.
  • Will it fit my panel pet door/screen door combination?

The Bug Warden is fully customizable. All you need is a pair of scissors to resize. The maximum supported gap width between the screen door and the pet door is 3" and the Bug Warden includes instructions to adjust the gap width size down to 2" or 1". For the uncommon case where the gap width between the pet door and screen door is less than 1", please contact customer support prior to purchase. The Standard Height is 81" (shipped as two 40.5" strips to control shipping costs). Also available in the Tall Height option of up to 101" (shipped as three strips). They also come in two colors, a black bug warden for the bronze panels and a white for the satin and white panels.
  • Will it work in my environment?

Yes. The Bug Warden is made of Santoprene which is much more environmentally friendly and fade resistant than vinyl (PVC) and specifically designed to withstand extremes including summer heat, winter cold, and humidity. Furthermore the adhesive was selected by experts at 3M to provide the desired adhesion between typical patio pet doors and the flexible Santoprene material.

Works great if we could keep it up. We have to keep on putting it back up again since it doesn’t stick well at all.

  • Total misrepresentation. Totally doesn't look like the photo. review by Bryan
5 2 Total misrepresentation. Totally doesn't look like the photo.

The photo shows what appears to be a fiberglass or plastic-looking solid piece that creates a nice finish and looks like you paid $52 for it. In reality, they send you a rubber curved strip that looks like a rubber hose cut in half that you stick on your pet door. And it's in two pieces - not even one solid piece. When I opened the package, I didn't even know what it was. I thought it was a wrong order. It doesn't complement the pet door insert at all. It looks trashy. Who would want a piece of black rubber tire stuck to their patio door? I'm just going to buy my own piece of hard plastic and make my own insert that looks more like the one in the photo.

It's not perfect, but certainly helps a lot to keep bugs out.. It would have been better if made in 1 piece. I had to staple the 2 pieces together.

5 4 I like the product, and it does keep out the bugs, But the company could have included a piece of tape.

The product does a good job of keeping out the bugs, and the door stop you included certainly works well. But you could have included some sort of sealant to join the two piece of the product and keep the bugs out there as well. For forty dollars, I can't believe it would have cost even a dollar. More like five cents, or maybe ten.

That's the only disappointment I have in the product since I've installed it.

These fit great width wise but the length came in 3 separate pieces. Would look much better as one piece since there are gaps. This was the only solution I could find to keep the bugs out.

  • Not worth the MOney review by Tracy
5 1 Not worth the MOney

The "bug warden" is two pieces of heavy material. It doesn't even come in one piece. Consequently it does not look good, and the two pieces go in opposite directions.

Hey Pet Door folks, I would like my money back. This product cost nearly $70, and the materials are probably $5, max.

Editor's Note: The item ships in multiple pieces in order to save the customer on shipping costs.

It works better than what I had before, but it still has some gaps at the top and where the two pieces come together. It would be better as one long strip and not two.

I bought this to keep bugs out of the gap when we have the panel in our sliding glass door and so far it works just fine. It's a bit pricey for a simple piece of material, but it does what it says. Very easy to install as well.

(ed. note: Published Jul 10, 2015)

This was sent to me in two pieces rather than one continuous strip, so the bugs can easily enter the separation between the strips. The white product attracts dirt so looks filthy all the time due to the breezy conditions here. Very disappointing and extremely overpriced.

(ed. note: Published Dec 21, 2014)

I bought this item based on the reviews. I watched the installation videos before installing this product. I am not happy with how it seals the screen to the dog door. During the 2 months that I had it installed it curled up to leave a 2" gap between the two pieces. Then it curled so much it would not seal with the screen door. I usually do not write negative reviews but this is not a product I could recommend to anyone.

Now PetDoors.com was helpful and I have no complaints about the company only the product.

(ed. note: Published Nov 13, 2014)

the waves in the strip leave spaces where insects can enter. there is a gap at the top where the door frame extends over the pet door and one at the bottom for the same reason. the joint where the two pieces meet are also wavy and leave a space for insects to enter. I left the pieces laying flat for about a week to try and eliminate waves but didn't help. would like to return for a refund if there's no solution.

5 3 OK, but should be one piece for tall door

(ed. note: Published Jun 16, 2014)

This is a great idea to keep bugs out, but for a tall door, there are two "joints" because the piece is not long enough. I have used black duct tape to hold the pieces together, but it would be so much better if it was all one piece.

    5 2 Glue didn't last

(ed. note: Published May 20, 2014)

When I first put this on two months ago, it was great, but now the glue has started to come loose and I don't think it will make it through the summer. Hopefully mine is just defective and that is why, but the product is decent for what it is intended for. There are still gaps at the top since it doesn't really mold to the door frame, but it will do a better job than nothing, providing it lasts.

ed note - You are correct this is a defect and should not have occurred. If you would like us to send you a new one at no additional cost, please contact us at sales@petdoors.com or (800)826-2871.

  • Gap for Bugs review by Chris
    5 4 Gap for Bugs

(ed. note: Published Apr 1, 2014)

Although the PetDoors.com overall service & quality & website are excellent, if the cut you make through the Bug Warden length is not a perfect 90 degree angle from the long edge, the cut edge and edge you need to joint the cut edge to won't join properly, and one piece will either have to overlap the other, which causes a gap between one piece and your screen door, or in order not to overlap the pieces, you must leave a gap between the pieces. Gaps are not what you want in a product designed to keep bugs out. Additional trimming is difficult to avoid overlaps or gaps. More advice on how to avoid this should be in the instructions.

I am very happy with my purchase. It was shipped with my doggie door and it was smashed. It took a few minutes extra (so I could make sure it was level), but snugged in extremely well and is much smoother and easier to access on a consistent basis when using the door.

5 4 It is good, BUT...

(ed. note: Published Dec 8, 2013)

The idea is a great one; unfortunately, the space between my glass and screen doors is a bit wider than the flap, so there is still a bit of a gap. If it were a bit larger, it would do a better job. It is better than nothing, however.

ed. note - Elizabeth we have a solution for the rare cases that have a non-standard gap size less than .75” or greater than 3” (less than 3% of the time). Please see this link: http://www.bugwarden.com/LargeGap.html

    5 1 Terrible Service

(ed. note: Published Jul 17, 2013)

Order Bug Warden priority delivery at extra cost on 7.10. Received 7.16 & vendor only 300 miles away. The product was delivered without the adhesive to mount. Vendor says to send it back as they apparently forgot to affix the adhesive to the side of the rubber panels. They will send another. So much for paying extra! So for $60.77 I received 2 pieces of rubber that could not be mounted & maybe receive in 2-3 weeks a correct product. Way to much $ for two pieces of rubber stripping worth about $5.00

ed note - We goofed. Shipped unfinished product. Priority Mail is not 'extra'.

This product was recommended to me by the customer service dept. of the manufacturer of my pet door (Ideal). I couldn't be happier! The instructions are pretty simple, & installation easy. The product seals the wide gap between my pet door & the sliding screen door very well. After ordering the product, the owner of the company contacted me to make sure everything went well. i posted the disappointed review when i had trouble getting a seal with the bug warden on my 5/8 screen gap. i was contacted very quickly by the owner/inventor of the bug warden who offered me a full refund and has gone out of his way to help make the product work for me. he is even engineering a new "prototype" of sorts to try to solve my problem. i am really impressed with the owner's concern about my satisfaction. if you should have any issues after purchase of the bug warden, it probably won't be with customer service.

The 'Bug Warden', an essential accessory if you ever leave your sliding door open for ventilation

Installation Instructions:
  • Step 1: View the installation video.
  • Step 2: Measure the gap between the sliding screen door and the pet door panel. If it is less than 2" then you will want to trim the width by cutting along the edge.
  • Step 3: Clean off the edge of the pet door panel with rubbing alcohol to remove any dirt or debris.
  • Step 4: Peel off the adhesive cover and install the bottom half of the two pieces onto the panel moving up the length of the panel edge.
  • Step 5: Measure from the top edge of the newly installed Bug Warden up into the track. Trim the top section of the Bug Warden down to fit, if necessary.
  • Step 6: Close the screen door to test the seal. Press down on both sides of the Bug Warden to firmly attach the adhesive to the panel.
  • Step 7: Make sure the screen door is closed pushing into the Bug Warden so it bends back about 1/2" from initial contact.
  • Step 8: Insert the screw through the stop washer and install them into the top track directly behind the Bug Warden.
