  • High Quality Door review by David
    5 4 High Quality Door

This is a great, high quality product that installed easily (or at least the guy I hired to install it said it was an easy install). The only issue I have is that it only comes with one locking cover. You can put the cover on either the inside or the outside, but it would have been better had the product come with two covers. That way you can close off both sides if necessary (which also help keep out the cold weather). Other than that, it’s a great little door.

  • Great door review by Corey B
    5 4 Great door

I have had this door for almost 4 years. It is a heavy duty door with heavy flaps and seals well. It has stood the test of time with dogs running in and out of the door a hundred times a day at warp speeds. It keeps the heat out in summer and the cold out in winter. There has been no cracking of the plastic flaps or the frame. The dogs (80lbs each) regularly smash into the sides of the door with no adverse results. The door was easy to install with clear directions. The only caveat I have is a very unique issue.... unique only to the Rhodesian Ridgeback breed (and I suspect Thai Ridgebacks). Rhodesian Ridgebacks have a strip of hair on their back that grows the opposite direction from the rest of the coat. Because of this, it did not occur to me that the metal strip on the bottom of the door would yank out the hair along their ridge. For several months I racked my brain because I did not realize this was happening via the dog door. However, it was an easy fix once I discovered the problem. A small piece of tape along the metal on both sides of the flap permanently resolved the issue. Still a great door!

  • Excellent Product review by Diane
    5 5 Excellent Product

We live on the Atlantic ocean, so wind is a huge factor. This double flap, extra large door really stnads up to the winds, while being easy for our Chihuahua to open and big enough for our Dogo Argentino to fit through. And it was easy to install using the template - great product and highly recommend.

  • Great doggie door! review by Susan
    5 5 Great doggie door!

My dogs had a single flap doggie door, the panel type that is placed on the side of sliding glass door. They were used to only one flap - so we weren't sure how they would do with the double flaps; but they are adjusting great.
Took them less than a week; and us humans love it!

My husband and his friend installed it in a couple of hours. I think I could have done it quicker, because I read directions!! It is a sturdy door and looks good inside and out.

    Highly recommend this door!!

  • The Right Door for my Dog review by Robert
5 5 The Right Door for my Dog

My dog is getting older and his legs are not as strong as they use to be. With the medium size I currently have he has to crouch down to get out which is hard for him to do so I talked to one of your customer service folks and they advised to get the extra large door. It has made all the difference in the world for my dog.

    5 5 Good product

I got it installed. It looks good. My dogs are still getting used to it. Their old door had 1 flap. This one has two and they just need more time. I'm sure they will adjust and I'm happy with the purchase.

5 4 easy to use but could look better

It's really nice to have 2 flaps on both sides that is just a standard, other ones are additional cost. They are very easy to move but i wish the frame just wasn't so bulky

  • Long Lasting And Durable review by Kathy
5 5 Long Lasting And Durable

We had our first Ruff Weather Dog Door for 11 years. It survived 4 golden retrievers and 2 hurricanes. It was still durable and completely in tact, but living so near the ocean had turned it yellow. During this last hurricane the outside plastic was covered by shutters and for some reason turned red??? However; we bought a new one, installed it and it looks great. If you can get 10 years use out of anything this close to the ocean, it is a good product.

  • Unreadable Print review by Bob
    5 4 Unreadable Print

You may have a great dog door, but you have a very poor web designer. All the words that are intended to be read are printed in such FAINT PRINT (NEARLY UNREADABLE ON WHITE) that I don't want to read it, and actually won't, For scores of years, people who want someone to read their writing print it in BLACK print on white background. Somehow, everybody lost track of common sense at about the same time, and started a contest to see who could make their print the most unreadable. I can't imagine why some brave soul hasn't taken the plunge, and started showing print in WHITE on a WHITE background. They would probably win the contest.

  • Through-the-wall Ruff Weather dog door review by Bill
    5 4 Through-the-wall Ruff Weather dog door

    (Published on 9/1/2014)

I'm giving this product four stars even though it probably deserves only three, in an ideal world. But, of course, we don't live in an ideal world, so I'm tacking on another star because, after TWELVE years, this dog door STILL WORKS GREAT (with one kit of replacement flaps about five years ago, and another one soon).

I'm pretty OK with general fixer-upper kinds of home projects — but cutting a perfectly aligned rectangular hole through both walls and adjacent to a blind corner of the house (i.e., you can't see the outside perpendicular wall from the inside) didn't feel like something I wanted to try to do. I know the limits of my skillset, such as it is. :-)

So I hired a handyman to do it. GOOD CHOICE! After a lot of sweat (New Mexico in July), dropped tools, dropped nuts, extensive curses in two languages, and so forth — same things that would happen if I was doing it, except probably a lot less — at the end of the day (literally), it was installed, sealed around the outside edges against the weather, and it looked great!

"Looked," as in past tense... because those flaps are starting to look pretty disgusting. I'm about to order another flap replacement kit (my second in twelve years).

Here are some important bits of advice when installing a through-the-wall Ruff Weather dog door kit:

    (1) Unless you are an EXPERIENCED handyman or some other kind of house construction pro, DON'T try to be the macho all-'round guy and impress your S.O. by attempting to do this job solo after the game is over on Sunday afternoon. Get somebody who has done this kind of work before and knows what s/he is doing. Because if you screw it up, you can't just chalk it up to experience, go get a new house, and start over. (If that's an option for you, then you aren't reading this anyway. You have "people" for that sort of thing.)

    (2) When selecting a location for the door, there are going to be a lot of things, both practical and esthetic, that you will want to think about — but DO NOT NEGLECT to think about exposure of the dog door to direct sunlight for hours at a time. The UV in the sunlight WILL break down the vinyl and cause it to crack, shrink, warp, darken, disintegrate — or, given sufficient time, all of the above, in no particular order. That's the nature of the stuff. Some material with all its advantages (transparency, light weight, flexibility, etc.) — PLUS resistance to UV — would sure be nice. Hey, maybe NASA invented something like that in the '60s for space vehicles. LOL Like to pay x10 the regular price for a dog door? Maybe x20? Hmmm, didn't think so. So — keep it out of direct sunlight 100% of the time. Even consider making an awning of some type to shade it, if that's the only option for keeping it out of the sun.

( OK, in the back there, what was that ? ... Smear it with SPF30 sun-block every morning? ... Uh, you don't REALLY wanna go there, right? )

    (3) The bottom or "floor" of the passageway through the wall needs to be supported. The bigger your dog (and dog door), the more important this is. Pea gravel or similar garden material seems to work well.

    (4) WHEN REPLACING FLAPS: Realize that ideal alignment of the flaps with the sides and bottom of the door frame is IMPORTANT. To get ideal alignment, it may be necessary to make several tries at positioning and tightening. There is some degree of slop in the oversize mounting holes, or even trim the flap(s), as one guy here wrote that he had to do, to really get this right. And you gotta get this right to keep the cold winter air outside where it belongs.

    Hope this helps!

I have had my Ruff Weather dog door installed for about a year now. I have found that it works well in my Northwest Climate. It is well engineered to stop cold drafts from blowing into the house. I decided to install a wall mounted dog door instead of the one I had installed years ago into our sliding door, which i found was very drafty and cold. I have two dogs, one of which is a 35 lb. Field bread Cocker. We choose the the Medium size "Double Flap" door, with the the "Wall Kit". I decided to install the door myself. I'm handy but not a carpenter. This some of what I found and I hope it will help you on your intalation. Read the directions a couple of times. Cut wall board with knife, not Sawsall, inorder to see if there is anything in the way of your project! One key eliment of a good job is getting the outside and inside openings lined up, take your time. Have a tube of Silicon on hand when you start, and seal around the outside well. Seal completely, where the the" wall kit" (box) joins the inside and outside portions. Hope this is some help?

I have purchased two of these doors so far. I learned the weaknesses from the first one and made modifications to the replacement. 1) The through the wall kit is not strong enough for stand alone use. I had to reinforce the sides and bottom to keep them from cracking. 2) The plastic "rail" that retains the plastic magnet holder is weak and breaks. I glued in a piece of 1/4" square wood trim along the rails to keeps the dogs toe nails from catching the plastic. 3) The magnets are not glued securely into the plastic magnet holder. I securely glued the magnets in. 4) The flap stretches and causes the edges to not seal. I have trimmed the top edge of the flaps so I could adjust them up but that is a very temorary fix. 5) The flap retaining strip is weak and the screws holes can be easily stripped. I will try using silicone adhesive on the replacement flaps I'm here to order today.

    5 2 Fair product

    (Published on 9/27/2012)

I have 2 large breed dogs and purchased the Ideal Ruff Weather dog door/ wall combo kit which has 2 flaps for additional weather-proofing. The screws that came with it were not long enough to actually pull all the parts tightly together, so I purchases new screws at Home Depot (Neg number one).
I live in Arizona and the dog door which faces east gets about 2 hours of morning sun. After the first year the magnets were all broken off and the bottom plastic pieces holding the magnets were all cracked up from the dogs abuse (neg number 2) By year 3 the exterior flap is torn about half way across the top and the interior flap has about a 1 inch tear and is badly warped so the sides don't touch the felt really doesn't keep out any weather anymore. (Neg 3).

So now I am faces with the question of buying a better product (probably metal) where I will undoubtedly need to reshape the hole in the wall...or buy a replacement of the same product knowing I am going to face the same issues..

Ideal “Ruff Weather” Wall Kit Installation Instructions

  • Tape Measure
  • Level
  • Pencil
  • Hammer and Nail
  • Electric Drill with ½” Regular Drill Bit
  • ⅜” Drill Bits
  • Saber Saw
  • Electric Screwdriver with Phillips Bit
  • Safety Goggles
  • Vice Grips
  • A Second Person
  • Silicon Caulking (not supplied)

Please Note: Make sure to take extreme care when cutting / drilling through walls to avoid gas, electric, and plumbing lines. Use the template and instructions provided with the door to accurately cut the opening.

Step 1: First, measure the thickness of the wall you will be cutting through. For walls measuring 6 ¾” to 7 ¼”,use the wall kit as it is. For walls less than 6 ¾”, put together the six panel sections that comprise the wall tunnel, and mark an “X” on all panel sections on the left side of the edge tabs. Now take apart and snap off the “X” marked edge tabs using vice grips. Reassemble and test the newly sized tunnel kit for fit. If the wall kit needs to be shorter, then snap off the right side edge tabs using your vice grips.

Step 2: Finish the final assembly of the kit by firmly pressing all six of the panel sections together.

Step 3: The wall kit screws are 9 ½” long. Use the following instructions to determine custom lengths: Take your wall dimensions and add 2 ⅝”. This will be the wall kit screws custom length you need. To cut the screws, mark this length on the screws and thread a ¼” x 20 nut onto the screw past the mark. Now clamp the screw and cut with a hacksaw at the mark.

Step 4: Have a friend hold the outer frame of the door in place and insert the assembled wall kit into the opening from the inside. We recommend a wood support to be installed inside the wall, underneath the wall kit. Now place the inner frame of the door into the opening around the wall kit. The wall kit is going to be slightly shorter than the cut-out opening thickness. Push the wall kit until it is touching the ribs on the inside frame. Caulk in place with silicone caulk.

Step 5: To complete the installation, insert the wall kit screws and tighten securely. Be careful not to overtighten the screws.

Step 6: We recommend using silicone caulking for added insulation to fill any gaps where the wall kit joins the inside and the outside portions.

Q: My Ruff Weather has a label of 10-1/2" x 17" on it, which flap size should I order?

A: You should order the XL Ruff Weather Replacement Flap (which is marked as 9-3/4" now, although the actual dimension of the flap did not change).

Q: My wall is over 7-1/4?

A: You can still use the Ruff Weather pet door, however you would need to build your own tunnel and use different hardware.

Q: Would small pets sharing with larger pets have an issue with the double flaps?

A: No, ideal ruff weather dog door and wall mount kit is easy for smaller pets to push open even with the double flaps since it only has magnets on the bottom.

Q: Does the door insulate well?

A: This is more of an economy style door, so it is best for more 3-season areas with not very high winds.

Q: What is the tunnel made of?

A: It is a very durable plastic. However, we would recommend putting some framing in the cut out to support it on the bottom especially in the Extra Large and Super Large sizes.

Q: Does it come in different colors?

A: No, the pet door and tunnel kits are only offered in light grey. However, they are plastic so you can paint them.

Q: What is the flap made of?

A: The flap is a clear flexible vinyl, 1/8"" thick.

Q: Can I close off the door when I don't them to use it?

A: Yes, the ideal pet ruff weather door comes with one ruff weather lock out slide, but there are tracks on both flap frames so you can slide it down from the inside or outside.

Q: How far does the frame stick out?

A: The frame is pretty bulky, more than most doors, and it sticks out about 2 1/2"" from the wall.

Q: Are there replacement parts?

A: Yes, we have the weather stripping and the flaps.

Q: Can I get a second cover?

A: Yes, but you have to go directly through Ideal.

Q: Is this the same as the Ideal Ruff Weather Dog Door and Wall Kit Combination?

A: They are exactly the same in size, but the flaps on the Designer are tinted and the frame is grey as opposed to the clear flaps and cream color frame on the old style.

Q: What is a 03RI20 RWXL?

A: That is actually our stock code for the XL Door (03RI20) and the manufacturer stock code (RWXL, ruff weather XL pet door).

Q: Is this easy to install?

A: If you are very handy it could be a good DIY solo pet door installation. However, if you are only somewhat handy or moderately handy hiring a licensed pro is highly recommended for all wall installations.

Q: Is the Ideal Pet Ruff Weather flap clear?

A: It is tinted gray, but it is see through.

Q: What is the maximum wall thickness for the Ideal Pet Products Ruff weather Pet Door with Telescoping Frame?

A: The maximum wall thickness is 7 1/4 inches.
