    5 5 Great Product

Excellent, we read the reviews of other customers before purchasing our Plexidor and the products are everything they are advertised to be. It is great to be able to reorder any necessary replacement parts rather than having to purchase and replace an entire door.

    5 4 overpriced

The only dog doors that works well. However the Springs will wear out at least once every ten years when you have more than one active dog. Make sure that your installation allows you to remove the door frame to place new springs into the mechanism on top. Order an extra set of spring with the new door as the shipping and handling for them doubles the price of the needed springs. The advertised discounts such as the one for joining the email network are not applied to the replacement springs which are also shown on Ebay as having free shipping (NOT) are not available when ordering over the web.
It would be nice to see a discount for more than one door for those people who live in Tudors or houses with more than one yard door on them.

Easy to install, and extends the life of our dog door, in spite of the flying labrador!

  • Excellent Service - Quality, but Pricey Product review by WyoMan
5 4 Excellent Service - Quality, but Pricey Product

Not sure what the other reviewers are so perplexed about, the parts arrived timely and it only took me about 30 minutes to install, including removing and reinstalling the door. Everything went together as it should, and the doors open and close nicely. I am appreciative the parts came so quickly as it was the midst of Wyoming Winter, and the wicked winds subsided just long enough this weekend to get the springs replaced. I am not to impressed with the Plexidor overall, however. Have had it in for about three years before one of the springs bit the dust, and the wind blows the doors open whenever it kicks up to around 30 mph (and of course they stay open at wind speeds above that). I even glued 4 magnets on the doors, which helped, but they still blow open...$45 bucks with shipping for parts!?!?!

  • Extra large review by Jeff
    5 3 Extra large

The extra large sring kit is not listed, so I ordered the large kit hoping the springs were the same. They are not! The large springs are not heavy enough to shut the extra large door. With that being said, if you have a large door or smaller, go ahead and order.

ed. note - When an item is out of stock, it is not listed for sale in order to avoid the situation where customers buy and then are disappointed by us not shipping promptly. When the xlarge spring set is back in stock it will show for sale.

  • disappointing! review by Ahart
    5 1 disappointing!

This kit is a complete nightmare to fit, half the parts do not fit and you need a degree to make sense of the instructions. A great shame, as it appears you need to basically buy an entire new door every few years, which is ludicrious!

  • I am typically rather handy review by Mark
    5 3 I am typically rather handy

I received this set of springs and doo-dads and they were not identical to the spring sets that were on my Plexidor (so they must be new and improved). While I LOVE Plexidor Pet Doors and have had them for 20 years, I must say that they should be delivered with their own installation handiman. (Seriously, local handimen who are familiar with the door should be on a Recommended Sheet for those of us who eventually throw up our hands in vain after 2 hours of trying to get springs set and washers put in the right position). So, my one door swings well while the other does not. Luckily I am moving homes and will end up removing the door with the dog door installed so we can show the house without any dog door in it.

I will be thrilled to simply purchase a new dog door for the new house and install it in one piece. So much easier!!!

    5 2 Pricey

I ordered this "spring set" because one of the doors no long worked. It wouldn't close anymore. None of the pieces that came with this set fit my door except for the spring itself. I changed out the broken spring for the new one and it works now. It just pissed me off that I had to pay $30 for a little spring! They should sell the spring alone because the rest of this set was of no use to me.

Size SMALL Spring Replacement Instructions

1. In order to get to the springs you will have to remove the interior frame of the pet door (the one that holds the flap) from the door or wall. This is done by unscrewing the 4 screws on the frame and sliding out the pet door.

Tip: If the frame doesn’t slide out you may also have to trim any sealant, caulking, or other adhesive that might be holding it in place.

2. Next you will need to take off what the manufacturer calls the spring hood (the metal cover over the springs on the top and bottom). There is a small hex head screw holding it in place that needs to be removed.

3. Now take out the pivot screw on the top of the spring assembly, the manufacturer suggests using a 5/16” nut driver. Then remove the old bent arm and spring.

4. Take the new white tube spacer and push that down into the frame of the door.

5. Next place the white thruster washer over the tube spacer and make sure that is securely pressed all the way down to the frame.

6. Then you will put the white flat washer on the assembly and that goes over the tube spacer.

7. Put the new spring down right on top over the white nylon tube with the til of the spring that points up at the bottom closest to the frame.

8. The spring will need to be charged so here is how:

- Facing the back of the pet door the tail of the spring that is slightly bent will be right in front of the vertical plate that sticks up.
- Using a pair of small pliers (wire grippers) get the top of the spring tail and wind it around to hook it over the vertical plate.

9. Next add the external tooth washer and place the new bent arm onto the pivot screw.

10. Take the new internal washer and put that on top of the bent arm and slide the pivot pin screw down into the assembly making sure to go all the way through to the frame of the pet door.

11. Turn the lock on the pet door to hold the flap in place right in the center of the frame while you tighten the pivot screw.

Tip: Do not over tighten, just need to make it snug.

Tip: It is important to make sure that the flap remains centered in the frame while you are tightening the frame.

12. Trim the ends of the spring tails down so that they aren’t touching anything when the door flap is opening and closing.

13. Use a good quality marine grease and apply a coat to the springs.

Tip: Do Not use WD40.

14. Put the spring hood back being careful not to over tighten the screw for that as well. Then reinstall the pet door frame and you’re done.

PlexiDor spring replacements for dog doors and cat doors

PlexiDor Med, Lg, XL Spring Replacement Instructions:

1. To get to the springs you need to remove the interior frame of the pet door from the door or wall. Unscrew the 4 screws on the frame and slide out the pet door.

Tip: There could be caulking, sealant, or other adhesive holding the frame on depending on how it was first installed. So if it doesn’t pull right out that could be why.

2. Next you will need to take off the spring hoods (the metal cover over the springs on the top and bottom of both sides of the frame). There should be small hex head screws holding them in place that need to be removed.

Tip: It is probably best to just change one spring set at a time.

3. Take out the pivot screw on the top of the spring assembly, using a 5/16” nut driver. Then remove the old bent arm and spring assembly.

4. Take the new pivot pin and push it down into the frame with the notched end on top.v

5. Next put the grey nylon shoulder washer over the top of the pivot pin, make sure that the widest part is on top, and push it all the way down against the frame.

6. Put the nylon tube spacer over the pivot pin, covering it up.

7. Now mount the spring on top of the nylon tube.

8. You will need to charge the spring so here is how:

- Position the spring so that the tail of the spring that points up is on the bottom. If you are facing the door, the tail will be in front of the vertical plate on the left hand side. And on the right it will be behind the plate.
- With small pliers (wire grippers) take the top of the spring tail and wind it around to hook it over the plate.

9. Take the bent arm and snap it onto the pivot pin.

10. Place the new internal washer on the the bent arm and put the screw down into the pivot pin.

11. Use the key lock on the pet door to hold the flaps in place right in the center of the frame while you tighten the pivot screw.

Tip: Do not over tighten, just need to make it snug.

Tip: It is important to make sure that the flap remains centered in the frame while you are tightening the frame.

12. Repeat steps 3 - 11 for the other springs.

13. Trim the ends off the the spring tails so that they are only 1/16” beyond the vertical plate if necessary.

14. Apply a coat of grease to the springs, use a quality marine grease.

Tip: Do Not use WD40.

15. Put the spring hoods back being careful not to over tighten the screws. Then reinstall the pet door frame and you’re done.

PlexiDor spring replacement for dog doors or cat door

Q: I am replacing the springs on my large Plexidor flaps that I purchased back in 2000, do I only need to purchase the springs?

A: With the Large Plexidor we recommend that if you bought the door before 2007 that you get new springs and new replacement panels so that they will function properly.  There were small changes that could affect how well the doors close.
