Pride Pet Door

If you like a trusted name on your products, the Pride Pet Door is the way to go. Pride offers sturdy, reliable products, and some of our customers have used this pet door with multiple pets for over 20 years!

Features of the Pride Doors

  • The flap is a heavy, black rubber that is particularly durable. Incorporates a two piece design which includes an inner flap and an outer “U” shape for better sealing and insulating value.
  • The locking cover is particle board enameled bright white on one side for greater visibility to the pet. For safety reasons it is designed to be breakable in case the pet crashes into it from the wrong side. It can be installed on either side of the pet door.
  • All sizes can be installed through screens using Pride screen adapter kits purchased separately.
  • They are non-self-framing, and best used in a solid core door. A wall installation would require framing out the wall.
  • Comes in Bronze, Black, Brushed Aluminum, Tan, White, and Adobe.

Perfect Time for a Pride Pet Door

  • Affordable yet durable solution that blocks out sunlight due to its solid color.
  • A sturdy dog door to install through a screen enclosure.
  • Large selection of frame color choices to match your home.
  • This pet door can be installed pretty much anywhere.

I've not yet installed the door (I need to enlarge the hole a bit). But I see that the door very well constructed, better than anything I saw at several pet stores in my area. I think it's a "go," for me and for the cats!

I recently purchased this pet door. It was the easiest door I have ever put in. The total time it took me to it in was 26 min.
I would definitely recommend this product for big dogs. I have a German Shepard and a black lab they have no problem getting in or out of the door. I would really recommend this door for big dogs.

  • Good service door leaves a little bit to be desired. review by Gary
5 3 Good service door leaves a little bit to be desired.

The first pet door had a bend corner (not from shipping) ,two extra holes in the frame and one acorn nut had an extra nut attached. It must have been made on Friday. I called Pet Door and they sent me a replacement door right away. But the new one still had one extra hole in it. I installed it anyway. The door comes so it can be installed in the wood in the bottom of a door or just in a screen. But since the holes on the two pieces line up. When using the wood screws they run into each other. Also since the screw holes are so close to the inside when the screw run into each other they are pushed to the inside of the door hole exposing the sharp end of the screws. The holes should be offset if you are going to installed it in a wood frame. The Pet Door Company was great the makers of the door do not take much pride in their work.

We chose the medium door for our 18lb beagle and 6lb Chihuahua. Before we had a small door with a clear flap. This flap is black and seems too big for the Chihuahua. We are trying to train with treats but no go after 2 days.

    5 4 4 stars

The inside frame was confusing for me as it took awhile to figure out what was the top and the bottom and which side of the frame would be attached to the door. Possibly a sticker can be put on this frame giving installer that information.
While I would prefer the clear flaps so that my dogs can see the other side, the flap is a heavy duty flap.
There are magnets on the bottom to hold the flaps down, however I would have liked to see magnets on the sides as to keep winter drafts from coming in.
All in all, the quality of the frame and flap is definitely better than the competitors.

  • This door is very dangerous review by Mach2SoccerMom
5 1 This door is very dangerous

I purchased the size Large for my 3 retrievers. The door was quite a bit more expensive than my previous dog door but it was the only door on the market that would fit in the opening in my wooden storm door for the previous dog door that wore out after more than 10 years. As I was installing it, I was concerned about the little tab that is meant to hold the piece of masonite that slides in to block the opening. It looked like something could catch on it or that it could poke one of the dogs if it approached at the wrong angle. As it turned out, that was not the problem. The problem was the way the metal was cut off on the opposite side of the track for the masonite leaving a very sharp metal corner. Within two weeks of installing the door, 2 of my 3 dogs had sustained a gash just under and within 1/2" of their right eye. If I had any other choice, I would have returned this door in a heartbeat but since I have been unable to find another door to fit the opening, I am going to file down the track corners on both the inside and outside until they are no longer sharp. If you buy this door, please beware.

    5 5 nice doors

Had trouble finding doors that would fit a large opening. These met our criteria perfectly. Doors are well made and they installed easily. Since our dog is a little larger we did not use the screws to hold both parts of the flap together. It works fine and he comes and goers very easily.
Only concern is that the older doors, from local pet store were completely covered in plastic through the opening. These are not and some of the core of the doors shows. Could be an aesthetic issue for some. Does give dog additional room and I plan on painting the core or fining a way to clean up opening a little.
Really glad we made purchase. By the way doors arrived in less than a week from ordering.

  • Disappointing review by Scott
    5 1 Disappointing

I must say I was disappointed. I have an older unit that has a metal frame n slide in closure. This unit is not metal n the slid in door is cardboard. Definitely did not feel that the new one is worth it. Salvaged n cleaned up my older model just used the flap from the new unit. At least the dog flap was the same

    Editor's Note:
The locking cover is particle board enameled bright white on one side for greater visibility to the pet. For safety reasons it is designed to be breakable in case the pet crashes into it from the wrong side. As the flap is black they would be unable to see the cover in place from the opposite side.

Not too expensive compared to other models and this is heavier than normal flaps so it holds up against heat better than those clear ones. It would be a better product if there were side magnets on it to make sure it stays closed all the time

  • Not all you need review by Brent
5 2 Not all you need

To be fair, what was included was well made. However, I have two major issues:
    1. The instructions (especially the part about the rubber being on the outside) are extremely unclear. Rubber is on outside no matter how you flip it, but everything about the constructions screams to put it on one way, while the instructions seem to indicate the other. The pictures are not helpful at all. If installed the way the instructions indicate, it won't fit because of the hinge portion in the upper corners.
    2. It's not mentioned (except in the instructions), but the "rough cut" you're instructed to make better not be rough - there's no molding/flashing/dressing etc. to fit over that part. You're told to seal it using paint or primer, but unless it's a finished cut it will look like crap. In other words, for a normal door, the inside and outside framing pieces make no effort to meet when installed, and the door interior is exposed. I had to purchase some vinyl flashing to make an interior lip that would cover the exposed wood. I would have used trim, but that will block the flap, as there is really no clearance around it and the hole you cut.

    Great idea, poorly executed.

    5 3 Painted into a corner

My experience with this brand is the magnets fall out after a while. But I found that all brands have different cut-out dimensions so once you've installed a door, you're kinda stuck with that brand. So, be mindful of the brand snd its features. I just hope these magnets in my new Pride door hang in there for a while.

I have had Labrador Retrievers for 50 years and have always had a dog door for them. These doors are the best that I have ever found. They seal well, are well made, and are more durable than some popular brands. I have the size large for my dogs however my sister's very small dog has no problem using the door when she visits. I have recommended this door to many of my friends and they have all been pleased as well.

  • black door flap review by jgcole
    5 1 black door flap

We have had a dog door for years that had a clear flap. When we moved to our new home, the pride door flap was black. Our dog tried to enter once, when unfortunately the door behind the screen door was closed. He hit his head on that door ( which he could not see because of the black flap) and now absolutely refuses to go through the dog flap. We have tried everything to entice him through the door - even his favorite treats have failed to get him to enter through that panel. I now just have too keep the screen door propped open when the dog is outside, and let him, and all of the flies and mosquitos, enter through the open door !

Needless to say I am very disappointed that you do not sell a clear panel and I am forced to replace, my otherwise fine door, with a pet friendly door.

  • Please create a transparent flap & sturdier cover review by LAN
5 2 Please create a transparent flap & sturdier cover

I recently had a professional window company create a pet door within my new dual-pane patio door. The Pride white pet door frame looks great with the white vinyl frame of the new patio door, but I was dismayed when the pet door cover was removed to reveal a heavy, black rubber flap. Aesthetically this is completely unappealing, and none of my pets will use it, as they're used to a lighter in weight, clear vinyl flap. I actually had no idea that anyone would even think of making a non-transparent pet door flap. Also, the pet door cover doesn't seem as if it will last long (made of fiberboard), and does not fit snugly within the grooves.

PLEASE, PLEASE give us the option to have a transparent flap replacement sometime in the near future. And please consider creating a sturdier, snug-fitting cover. Both of these options will GREATLY improve your product. Thank you.

  • Better doors to be had review by Shameonme
5 1 Better doors to be had

I just had a Pride Pet Door installed by a professional and what an unfortunate surprise to discover it doesn't come with any type of self sizing frame to cover the rough cut opening. It looks horrible even though the installer did a good job on cutting the opening. The black flap is also a downside since my dog doesn't want to go into a black hole. My last comment is the poor sealing capability of this door, you can feel the draft come right through all edges. I really failed on doing my research prior to having this door installed. If I can save one person from making the same mistake of purchasing this door, my time taken to write this was worth it. Consider an Endura Dog Door, extremely better quality.

5 5 Very sturdy pet door

We had our original Pride pet door for 10-12 years and was used daily by up to 3 dogs during that time. Many times, it was used by up to 5 dogs when company came for the week-ends. All but 1 of these dogs were large. Sometimes it looks like a swinging saloon door, it gets used so much. It is an extremely well made and sturdy dog door and we are very pleased with how it's held up to the abuse. The only reason we had to replace it was because we had the solid door insert in to keep all our hooligans outside when thunder and lightening started. Our 1 dog is extremely afraid of thunder and tore out the entire pet door to get in the house! I couldn't believe my eyes! That pet door was "farmer installed" if you know what I mean. We've looked at a lot of pet doors and come back to Pride. Highly recommended by the pack and the pack's owners!

A well made manual pet door. Good quality and price.

I would recommend you give customers the option of upgrading
to a metal closing door vs. the fiber board for security reasons.

The medium and large size door is easily entered by a burglar
by simply kicking in the flimsy fiber board. I took mine and reinforced with tin to help prevent this from happening.

Other than that a very good dog door.

    5 4 Great Door!

I ordered this door for indoor use and it is almost perfect. Long story short, I wanted a cat door for our bedroom door. I also wanted a black cover and not clear because I wanted to keep out the light in the mornings. Our cat also has a clear cat door to go out to the garage for his litter box but it still took him over two weeks to learn to use this door because it is on the heavy side. He finely got used to it but it does make some noise when he goes through because it is heavy. I realize that it is this weight because it is supposed to be a door to the outside but I do wish they made a lighter door for inside use. This is a great door though and made very well!

After my dogs used the original door installed by a licensed glass company; the rubber surface was bowing after 15 years of use. I found an exact match and needed to only substitute the rubber to the original painted frame for a brand new perfect fit. Now my dog doesn't have to lean in to it to open and I have a nice precise airtight open and closing, my old dog no longer stresses over; not knowing when the old one would give to the pressure of her head. I miss the old norm of made in America precision such as yours where, ordering a whole door from you, the parts are completely interchangeable with decades old technology you made. You made it right the first time and never changed it. NASA might want to buy this dog door for the moon station.

Pride Deluxe Series Pet Doors

Pride Pet Doors Installation Instructions

Tools Required

  • Keyhole or Pointed Saw

  • Drill with 3/16” and ½” bits

  • Phillips head screwdriver

  • Pencil

  • Carpenter’s Square

  • Level

1. Use the narrow door frame as a template, and place the narrow frame on the surface where the pet door will be installed. Hold tightly and trace a line around the inside of the frame opening. Make sure the frame opening will be level and straight.

2. Drill ½ inch holes at the inside corners of the lines drawn for the opening. Now saw just outside of those lines.Once the hole is cut, place the inside narrow frame in the hole and check to make sure it is straight and level. Mark the screw holes with a pencil, and do this on both sides of the door.

3. Before you install, you will need to finish the opening to prevent weather damage. For a solid core door, smooth the opening surface and either paint or seal with waterproof sealant. For a hollow core door, use wood filler strips to make a frame and fill the empty space between the inside and outside door skins. The wood filler strips should be glued and / or nailed into place to provide a stronger mounting base for the pet door. Painting or applying waterproof sealant to the wood filler strips is recommended.

4. You are now ready to assemble the pet door. We recommend not to caulk the bottom of the outside frame so that moisture will not become trapped inside the opening. Caulking along the top and sides of the outside frame would be beneficial. Place the wide aluminum frame with the rubber assembly on the outside of the house door and secure loosely with wood screws. Put the inside narrow frame on the inside of the house door in the same way.

5. Before you tighten the screws, check the pet door for squareness. If the rubber assembly is touching the sides fo the frame, then move the frame horizontally until rubber hangs straight and swings freely. You can check this with a level and / or carpenter’s square. Do this with both inside and outside frame, and when both are level, tighten the screws.

6. You are now ready to train your pet to use your new pet door!

Q: If I would like to use the Pride door through my screen do I just have to purchase the adapter?

A: If you do not have the pet door yet you must purchase the door and the adapter separately. If you already own a Pride Deluxe Pet Door, then yes, you only need to purchase the Pride Door Screen Adapter. We also have the Pride Pet Door for Screens that includes both.

Q: Is there a clear version of the flap available?

A: Currently, there is no clear flap available. The solid black is a durable solution that blocks out sunlight.

Q: My Johnson model had side magnets, does this have side magnets too?

A: This replacement for the Johnson models does not have side magnets in the Small, Medium, and Large.

Q: How do I lock this at night or when I am out of town?

A: A locking cover comes with every purchase. You can slide it on either side of the frame to let your pet know they cannot enter from outside or the inside.

Q: What is the flap made out of?

A: The flap on the pride doors is made out of recycled tire rubber. This does make it heavier, so smaller pets may need training in order to use the door.

Q: How thick does my door have to be in order to install this?

A: There is no thickness required since it is not self framing. You or a contractor will have to frame out the door or wall.

Q: Can I get the U shaped piece by itself?

A: The U shaped piece is not sold separately, it comes with the replacement flap should you need another one.

Q: What kind of weather does this work against?

A: The insulation value is moderate, so it might not be the best choice for climates with extreme wind, cold or hot weather.

Q: What is the locking cover made out of?

A: The cover to secure the opening is made of fiberboard. It is prone to damage from rain so be sure to keep it away from extreme moisture.

Q: Can I install this in a steel door?

A: Yes! This can be installed almost anywhere, although we suggest installing in solid core materials.

Q: I would like to purchase this in replacement of my Johnson frame, are they going to fit the hole in my door exactly the same?

A: The dimensions should be pretty close. We would suggest double checking your existing rough cut to make sure this new item will fit. For any flap size, the rough cut dimension is included in the size chart.

Q: Do you have a Color Chart for Pride Bronze pet doors?

A: The Bronze Pet Door is the main image on the product page. Other colors can be found on the third picture below the main image.

Q: What are the outside frame dimensions of the bronze dog door Pride LD500?

A: The outside frame dimension of the Pride Model LD 500 is 15 1/2" wide x 19 3/4" high.

Q: I want a true brown pet door frame, not black, what dog door do you recommend?

A: The Pride Pet Door is Brown. They have a separate frame color for black.

Q: For sizing properly, what size hole should I cut for a Pride LD 500?

A: The Rough Cut Out is 14" wide x 18 7/8" high.
