The SureFlap microchip pet door for sliding glass doors features the most energy-efficient, dual-pane Thermo panel for the utmost insulation value for your home. The SureFlap pet door is designed with RFID technology that senses your pet's implanted microchip (or RFID collar tag) in order to only allow your pet to enter through the automatic pet door while keeping out neighborhood cats and other unwanted critters. Any pet can exit the pet door, but only those with a microchip or RFID collar key can enter. This door also includes a 4-way lock that can override the RFID technology if you want to further customize access. Made with a 7" x 7" flap, this is the largest electronic pet door on the market, accommodating small dogs and cats of all sizes. It's the perfect pet door for large cats! The Thermo panel is available in different sizes to fit your track height perfectly.

Features:

  • Fits almost all track heights. Choose from the following range:
    • Short: 74 3/4" - 77 3/4"
    • Regular: 77 1/4" - 80 1/4"
    • Tall: 93 1/4 -  96 1/4"
  • Sturdy aluminum frame is designed to fit sliding glass door tracks at least 1" thick.
  • Panel's spring-loaded design does not require any tools for installation. You just need to install the rigid plastic pet door into the panel. Check out the 'Videos' and 'Installation Instructions' tabs for details.
  • Pet patio panel features dual-pane glass and Low-E coating for enhanced thermal quality.
  • 7" x 7" flap fits small dogs and cats of all sizes.
  • Includes a 4-way locking system (in or out only, completely locked or unlocked) when switched to the manual setting, which overrides the electronic door RFID technology.
  • Includes 1 RFID collar key in case your pet is not yet chipped.
  • Programs up to 32 pets easily and is compatible with all microchips worldwide.
  • Features a curfew mode, which allows you to set a certain period of time in which you block access to the door to keep pets inside.
  • Operates on 4 C batteries that last around 6 months.
  • When batteries are low, an indicator light flashes every 5 seconds. Replace the batteries when this light is flashing. When the batteries die, the door defaults to the locked position, which could leave pets stuck outside.
  • This panel will not mate with an existing sliding door lock so we include either a C-Clamp Lock. You can also purchase a Charley Bar if you would prefer.

Raccoon Mode:

Custom Mode 5 is the raccoon mode, making this door a raccoon-proof cat door. As soon as the sensors detect an animal's head in the tunnel of the pet door, the door scans to read for a microchip. If the animal is not one whose chip has been programmed to trigger the door, the two locks on the exterior of the door are activated for added security. At this point, the unit will keep scanning for a microchip, and the exterior locks will remain engaged until approximately 10 seconds after the intruder animal has moved away from the door. When the exterior locks are engaged it makes it impossible for the raccoon to open the door towards them in order to get in. The interior locks prevent the raccoon or other stray animals from pushing through the door into the house. The combination of the two sets of high-quality locks have proved impenetrable to raccoons in our product testing.

Benefits:

  • Spring-loaded design ensures simple installation and easy removal.
  • Prevents raccoons, strays, and other unwanted critters from entering your home.
  • Prevents sleep loss caused by letting pets in and out during the night.
  • Microchip sensing technology is great for pets who refuse to wear collars.
  • Curfew mode allows you to keep pets inside for an allotted time period if need be.
  • Even if a pet is outside when curfew is on and the door is locked, they can still get in with the microchip sensing but other critters can't.

FAQ

What do I do if none of the panel sizes will fit my door?

If none of the standard Thermo panel sizes will fit your sliding glass door, you can always get a custom door made specifically to fit your house.

What locking mechanism can I use for the Thermo Panel 2e?

For track adjustment ranges 80.25" and below, you'll install the included clamp lock. Alternatively, you can purchase a Charley Bar for added security for taller panels.

What kind of microchips will work?

All microchips from North America will work with this electronic smartdoor. If you're not sure or if your pet needs a microchip, consult your veterinarian.

What if my sliding glass door does not fall in these dimensions?

This kitty and doggie door has custom options available that you can choose from when entering your track height adjustment range.

Will the flap open automatically when my pet approaches?

No, the flap will just unlock. Your pet still needs to push the flap open to use the pet door manually once unlocked.

How do I lock my sliding glass door with this panel in?

Since the existing lock of your sliding glass door will no longer work, a lock you can install in your frame will be included. For track adjustment ranges 80.25" and below, you'll install the included clamp lock. For 80.25" and above, you can purchase a Charley Bar for added security.

Does this have a timer?

Yes. This has a "Curfew Mode" that can be set to have the pet door lock/unlock during certain times of the day.

How long does the battery last? Is there an AC adapter?

The battery typically lasts between 6 -12 months depending on usage. There is currently no AC adapter available.

Can I use this in my vinyl sliding glass doors?

Yes if the track is at least 1" thick.

Can other animals with microchips open this door?

No, only the microchips or collar keys recognized with the door will be able to use this pet door. It would be very difficult for other animals to pry the door open.

Will this work on extreme weather conditions?

Since the electronics are pretty sensitive, this door is not completely weatherproof and we do not recommend directly exposing the flap door to the weather.

How many different pets can use this door?

Pet owners can program up to 32 different pets to use this door.

I need a microchip dog doors for sliding glass doors, do you have one?

Lots of dog owners ask about a microchip door for their large pups. Unfortunately, RFID doors are limited in size due their technology. The Thermo Panel 2e with SureFlap Microchip Door is the largest with a 7" wide x 7" high flap size. For an electronic option that opens to a collar key (just not a microchip), the High Tech Pet Power Pet Patio Door works for larger pets in this same way, scanning a smartkey attached to their collar. However, for very large dogs the technology likely won't work due to limited frequency range.

Is this electronic dog door available for other installation locations like a door or wall?

Yes! If you decide you still want one of the best electronic dog doors but don't want to install in sliding glass there are a number of alternatives. Check out our full selection of electronic pet doors.

Installation Instructions for the Thermo Panel 2e with SureFlap Microchip Door for Sliding Glass

PARTS & TOOLS

All Panels

1x Foam Weather Strip • 1x Center Post Weather Seal Draft Stopper

1 Piece Pet Door

1x Panel Pet Door • 1x Sliding Door Clamp

2 Piece Pet Door

1x Top Glass Panel Section • 1x Bottom Flap Section

4x Hex screws • 1x Hex wrench • 1x Threshold mount deadbolt w/screws

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

The aluminum, vertical panel has a patented ‘Adjustable Step-Over’ feature which permits adjusting the height of the flap to the most comfortable fit for your pet. Generally, the top of the flap should be positioned to be at least 1” (2,5 cm) above the top of the pet’s shoulder (the ‘withers’). If the factory setting is not suitable, please adjust it before proceeding. If the current setting is suitable, or you have the vinyl panel, proceed to step 3.

ADJUSTING THE STEPOVER HEIGHT - OPTIONAL (for aluminum panels only)

1A. Two-piece panels: Simply slide the pieces up and out from the bottom half of your panel to rearrange. Loosen a bottom screw if the pieces are too snug to move.

One-piece panels: Lay the entire panel on a flat surface (like the floor). Using a #2 Phillips head screwdriver, remove the bottom side-screws, and loosen the next upper screws one turn. Screws were tightly installed to hold the panel together during shipping; a drill is recommended*.

*If you do not have a Phillips head drill bit skinny enough to fit, let us know and we’ll send you one for free.

2B. One-piece panels: Once the bottom screws have been removed and the next upper side-screws loosened, the Pet Door Assembly and spacers can be removed by sliding the sections down and out of the panel.

2C. Replace the spacers and the Pet Door Assembly by sliding them back in a different order to achieve the desired height. You can move the spacer below or above the flap to raise or lower the flap height.

The order of the pieces is important! The piece on the bottom needs to always be at the bottom, as that is where the screws attach.

When finished, replace the bottom side-screws and tighten the next upper-side screws for one piece panels and skip to step 4. For two-piece panels, you can now assemble the patio panel!

Note on flap height and pet size:

A lower step-over height is easier for pets to navigate. However, if the top of the flap is low enough that the pet needs to crouch to get through their pet door, they can injure themselves and possibly cause the pet door to malfunction. If your pet door does not sit at a comfortable height for your pet, you may need a larger size flap.

TWO PIECE PANEL

(if you have a single piece panel, please proceed to step 4)

3A. Align the aluminum connectors extending from the bottom flap panel section with the top glass panel section. Press the aluminum connectors into the holes at the bottom of the top glass panel section. Ensure locking cover & thumb screws are on the same side!

3B. Gently tap the bottom surface of the panel against the ground to completely insert the connectors. Protect hard surfaces to prevent scratching. The components of the panel are designed to slide together very tightly.

3C. Fasten the two panels together using the four stainless steel hex head screws found in the panel packaging. Use the hex wrench to tighten screws so the two halves of the door are pulled together.

Note: Screw holes may look misaligned; this is intentional to ensure a tight fit. The panels will squeeze together as the screws are tightened.

4. Loosen the thumb screws at the top of the pet panel. This allows the spring mechanism to move freely up and down.

5. To insert the panel pet door into the top track, push up against the spring mechanism and swing the bottom of the panel up and over the threshold. Seat the panel on top of the small guide rail in the track. If you can’t quite get it in the track, try swinging in from the outside as the outside track wall may be shorter.

You want to put the pet door in your track before applying any weather-stripping to ensure it fits! If it fits well, move on to the next step. See our tips at the end of these steps if you have trouble!

6. Once you’re sure the panel fits, remove the panel from the frame and lay it on its side on the ground. Apply the foam weather-stripping by peeling back the paper and exposing the adhesive. Unroll it along the edge of the panel, pressing to ensure it adheres. Install on both sides, trim to fit with scissors.

7. The center post weather seal strip (draft stopper) should be installed on the inside of the home. It can install on either the back edge of the sliding door panel or the leading edge of the stationary panel. This strip prevents air leaking between the sliding glass door and the stationary panel. Trim with scissors as needed. Clean the edge of your patio door with rubbing alcohol before installing to assure a good seal.

LOCK DETAILS

Since you cannot lock your sliding glass door to your panel pet door, we have provided you with an alternative locking method to secure your home:

Doors over 80 1/4" (203,8 cm) Tall

Installing the threshold mount deadbolt lock: For doors manufactured with the glass slider on the inside track, the lock can usually be installed on the back of the slider using the mounting screws provided. For doors manufactured with the slider on the outside, the lock is installed on the leading edge of the stationary panel.

Drill a 3/16" (4,8 mm) hole into the frame opposite the steel deadbolt lock. This hole MUST be 3/4" (1,9 cm) away

from the inside edge of the door’s frame to avoid drilling into the glass. Drilling into the glass will cause the glass to shatter.

Doors under 80 1/4" (203,8 cm) tall

Installing the sliding door clamp: This clamp has a screw which tightens by hand to prevent the sliding door from moving beyond the clamp’s placement. For doors manufactured with the glass slider on the inside track, the lock can usually be installed on the door’s raised track.

SUREFLAP MICROCHIP DOOR INSTALLATION

PARTS & TOOLS

1x Panel

1x Foam Weather Strip

1x Center Post Weather Seal Draft Stopper

Separate Box:

1x Microchip pet/cat door

You will need to do a couple extra steps to install your SureFlap Microchip Pet Door, Cat Flap or DualScan through your panel. The SureFlap ships in a separate box, and before you open it you should first test to make sure your panel will work in your door or window. Follow steps 1 & 2 from the Panel Installation Instructions.

Remove your SureFlap from its box, and follow the directions included to program the pet door. You can then proceed with the instructions below!

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

Insert SureFlap Cat Flap into hole

Step 1:  After testing the panel to make sure it works in your window or door, and testing that the SureFlap will work with your pets, you are ready to attach the pet door to the hole in the panel!

Screw SureFlap Cat Door in place

2. Find the middle length screws in the SureFlap box. The Pet Door version uses 4 screws, while the Cat Flap and Dual Scan will only utilize 2 screws.

Thumbscrews should be on the same side as the controls of your SureFlap. Installing your SureFlap with the controls on the outside of your home will damage the pet door and void SureFlap’s warranty.

3. The trim frame and screws will go on the ouside of the panel. Place the side with the locking controls on the inside of the panel. The controls will need to be on the same side as the thumbscrews. You can then follow the remaining instructions for either the vertical or horizontal panels.

OTHER INSTALLATION OPTIONS

You might choose to secure your pet door in your track with screws. This can be done by drilling screws at an angle in the top and bottom tracks. We recommend doing this from the outside to minimize damage to the sliding glass door frame. One-way screws will prevent tampering or removal of the panel from the outside.

STATIONARY PANEL

Some stationary panels can be unfastened and moved over to one side so that you can install the pet door panel between the jamb and stationary panel. Avoid damaging your sliding glass door by checking that your door can move and that you can reinstall it properly before trying to uninstall the unit.

You will still lose space in your slider to move through, however you will be able to use your existing sliding door lock to secure your home. Installing your pet door this way is also great if you already have an alarm system in place. If your sliding glass door slides on the outside track, using an alternative lock might not be possible so this allows you to still lock your door.

Training Sessions

Getting Started: Some pets will take longer than others to acclimate to their new door, so patience is key! Never push or shove your pet through the door (this will only develop negative feelings). Instead, follow these training tips + tricks to help introduce your pet to the door gradually.

Limit training sessions to no more than 10 minutes at a time. Two well spaced out sessions per day should be the maximum.

Hold the flap all the way open for your pet at first; then a little less each subsequent time so your pet learns to push through on their own. Stay consistent with verbal encouragement and treats for best results.

Teaching Your Cat to Use Their Door

Step One: Introduce your cat to the door by putting your hand through it so they know how it works. Have them inspect the new cat flap to get used to the look and smell (this is a great time to program your cat’s microchip!).

Tip: You can wipe your cat’s face or body with a cloth and wipe the door with the same cloth to give it a more familiar scent.

Step Two: Some cat doors make a slight clicking noise when opening and closing which can scare timid cats. Try manually opening and shutting the flap slowly to familiarize your cat with this noise.

Step Three: Get your kitty’s favorite treats or toy ready! Start by using a treat to encourage your cat through while holding the flap open for them. Once they are comfortable, start lowering the flap on them as they walk through for their treat.

Tip:Be sure to train your cat using the actual door height - meaning raise the door enough so it resembles how high it will be once installed.

Tip: If you have a door with non-removable magnets, putting some painter’s tape over the magnets can help decrease the magnet attraction strength temporarily for training purposes.

Step Four: Always make sure to reward your cat with praise (and maybe another treat) when they pass through the door.  Remember: training can take a considerable amount of time. There is no standard practice as every cat is unique.

Quick Tips

- For especially timid cats, temporarily tape it up out of the way while they get used to the idea of walking through the tunnel.

- Clear flaps may confuse pets as they might think the flap is a window. Try putting a piece of masking tape on the clear flap to distinguish it from a window and reinforce to your pet its use as a door.

- Magnetic and weighted flaps have additional weight which may be difficult for your pet to push through. Fix this problem by gently pushing the door to assist your pet as they go through or removing the magnet until your pet gets used to the full weight of the door on their own.

- If you plan on installing more than one pet door, use the same flap if possible for consistency.

- Electronic flaps make a small clicking noise when the flap is activated that may frighten timid pets. The best way to remedy this problem is to positively reinforce this sound in your pet’s mind.

- Praise your pet when they come near the door and hear the activation noise.

- If this does not work, disable the electronics with “training mode” and have your pet use the door manually for a week or so while getting acquainted with the door.

- Consistency is key! Stay consistent both in your training methods and your choice of pet doors. If you have multiple pets the first to learn will often demonstrate  for the others!

- When your first lock the flap shut, introduce your pet slowly rather than letting them “learn the hard way” by running into it.
