The SureFlap Pet Door works with all identification microchips supplied by your vet and SureFlap RFID collar tags.

SureFlap Microchip Pet Door and Wall Mount

This offers the parts needed for installation of a SureFlap Microchip Pet Door through a wall of any thickness.

This Pet Door includes a 7" x 7" flap opening large enough for even the biggest cats as well as many smaller dogs. The pet door scans your pet’s implanted chip used for identification (not included with the door and must be purchased from your vet and implanted at a scheduled office visit). If your pet is not yet microchipped, you can use the included collar key until you make the trip to the vet!. Note that use of the RFID chip must be discontinued after chipping as the two signals will confuse the pet door.

There are a number of very important features on the Sureflap Microchip Pet Door

  1. First, the locking mechanism has four separate locking pins holding the flap in place. This makes for a very strong and secure lock against intruders including raccoons. This is what makes this pet door very raccoon resistant.
  2. Up to 32 different chips (either vet implanted or external rfid tags) can be stored in memory. So no matter how many pets you have (up to 32!) you can allow them to use this pet door.
  3. A simple control allows you to electronically set a 4-way lock. So your pet door may operate as 'in-only' or 'out-only' as well as normal 'both way' and 'locked' operation.
  4. A built-in timer allows for what the manufacturer refers to as 'curfew' mode. This mode allows you to activate and deactivate the 4-way lock at specific times of the day.
  5. If you find yourself without a collar key for some reason, this pet door is easily set to 'manual' operation (ie no entry control) until you have your chip or collar key back again.
  6. Please note, this pet door does NOT control which animals leave your home, only those who enter your home.
  7. As the SureFlap is battery powered (4 C batteries last about 6 months depending upon usage). When the batteries need to be replaced the level on the screen will show as low and the indicator light will blink red. The door will continue to operate, however you should replace them soon as once they run out the door will revert to the locked position, locking any pets outside.

Raccoon Mode:

When custom mode 5 has been activated, as soon as the sensors detect an animal’s head in the tunnel of the product, it scans to read the animal’s chip.  If the animal is not one whose identity is stored in the door’s memory, the two locks on the exterior of the door are activated for added security.  At this point the unit will keep scanning for a microchip and the exterior locks will remain engaged until approximately 10 seconds after the intruder animal has moved away from the door.  When the exterior locks are engaged it makes it very difficult for the raccoon to open the door towards them in order to get in.  The interior locks prevent the raccoon from pushing through the door into the house – the combination of the two sets of locks have proved very resistant to raccoons in our product testing.

The only time that we would not recommend engaging this custom mode is if the pet tends to play with the flap by batting it away from them whilst sitting in the house.  If the flap is batted far enough open into the tunnel that it triggers the sensors, the secondary locks would engage and when the flap closed the door would be locked in both directions for a period of 10 seconds or so.

This sounds to us as though the Sureflap people have really working on developing an impenetrable, secure from intruders, pet door.

SureFlap is compatible with the following commonly used microchips in North America

  • All 15 - digit (FDXB)
  • All 10 - digit (FDXA) except those with codes starting 000..., 010..., or 020...
  • All 9 - digit (Avid Secure/Encrypted Chip)

This is the second Sure-Flap Microchip Pet Door that we've owned. The first was installed 4 years ago & both cats quickly learned how to use it. With time, the magnets which kept the door tightly closed rusted and fell out due to the maritime Pacific Northwest weather. Between that and some needed remodeling there was no question that we'd replace it with the same product. This door works as advertised and successfully kept the neighbor's cat from entering the house despite his repeated efforts by head butting the door (which he eventually stopped after a few months). Highly recommended!

The microchip features of this are super handy for cats who do not like to wear collars. Programming was a bit tricky but once it was programmed, it worked like a charm.

5 4 works most of time

The only reason I can't give it a 5 stars is because if one cat, is trying to get inside, and is being closely chased by an enemy cat from the outside, it is possible for the "enemy" cat to get inside even if he or she is not programmed to do so.---This is because it takes about a second for the door to reclose. But it is wonderful for the "enemy" cat (who also belongs to us, but just doesn't "play well with others") to be blocked and outside for most of the time.

(Ed. Note: The customer was contacted with possible solutions)
We found after a while our cat stopped exiting house through the door. She comes in through door but not out. We found that after she comes in the door sticks. It only took one time for her to be refused exiting and she no longer will try.

    5 5 Excellent Cat Door

    (Published on 3/10/2014)

We have had this cat door for more than 4 years now without any problems. They changed the actual plastic door that opens and closes, which makes it impossible for raccoons to reach under and pull it open now. It was a problem when we first bought the door, but the SureFlap people changed the design and fixed it without any additional cost. We live in a cold climate so the only thing I wish they would work on is a way to keep the batteries warmer. We tend to go through batteries pretty quickly. Other than that it's a great cat door worth every penny. Our cats agree.
