Installing your PetSafe Electronic Smart Door has never been easier, thanks to the telescoping tunnel design. Please read instructions & notes thoroughly before installation. This installation requires the PetSafe Smart Dog Door (purchased separately).

Step 1 Choose Installation Location

  • Use the stud finder to locate the studs in the wall where the pet door will go. Make a small mark where the studs are.
  • With your pet standing between the stud marks, draw a five inch horizontal line at his shoulder height.
  • Locate the center between the two studs and draw a five inch vertical line through the horizontal line marking your pet’s shoulder height.

Step 2 Position the Template

  • Cut the template to the correct size according to the pet door.
  • Align the lines on the template with the lines on the wall and tape in place.
  • The lines on the wall may need to be extended, depending on the size of the pet door.
  • Use the level to check that the template is square and level.
  • Trace the template with a pencil.
  • Remove the template and tape from the wall.

Step 3 Drill the Corner Holes

  • Drill 5/16 inch holes inside the corners of the traced template.
  • Hold the drill steady and straight.

Step 4 Make the Cutout

  • Place the jigsaw blade into a corner hole and cut along the drawn template lines.
  • Continue cutting along the template until an opening is created.

Step 5 Insert the Interior Frame

  • Insert the interior frame into the opening to check the fit.
  • Make small adjustments to the opening if the frame does not fit easily.

Step 6 Insert the Exterior Frame

  • Align the template with the corner holes and trace.
  • Place the jigsaw blade into a corner hole and cut along the drawn template lines.
  • Continue cutting along the template until an opening is created.
  • Insert the exterior frame into the opening to check the fit.
  • Make small adjustments to the opening if the frame does not fit easily.

Step 7 Install Supports

  • Start on the interior side and measure the gap in the wall.
  • Cut a 2x4 or 2x6 piece of wood to the gap measurements. Remove any debris from the wall where the support will go.
  • Place the piece of wood in the wall gap. Make sure it is flush with the bottom cut out of the wall.
  • Drill two holes at the bottom of the cut out and use two drywall screws to fasten the wood on the interior wall. Make sure the support fits snug and is not too long or short.

Step 8 Fasten the Supports

  • To fasten to the exterior wall, drill two holes at the bottom of the cut out and use two drywall screws to fasten the wood.
  • For vinyl siding it may be necessary to drill a hole through the siding slightly larger than the screw.

Step 9 Install the frame (Large Size)

  • Insert the interior frame of the pet door into the interior frame of the wall expansion tunnel.
  • Connect the interior pet door frame to the expansion tunnel with four screws, one in each corner.
  • On the back of the expansion tunnel, add a lock washer and tighten a hex nut onto the screw to secure in place.
  • Insert the exterior frame into the wall. Tape or have someone hold the frame in place.
  • Insert the interior frame and tunnel into the wall. Secure with six Phillips head wood screws.

Step 10 Secure the Exterior Frame

  • Secure the exterior frame with four Phillips head wood screws, one in each corner.
  • Use the additional four screws to make sure that the door is flush against the wall.
  • Fill in any gaps between the wall and the frame with caulk.

Set the Sensitivity:

Step 1: Attach the key to your pet’s collar.

Step 2: Secure the collar to your leg, just below the knee.

Step 3: Stand directly in front of the door. The key will be about 2.5 feet from the door.

Step 4: Press and hold the Mode-Reset button down. The indicator lights will begin to cycle.

Step 5: Release the button when the green light is illuminated.

Step 6: Press and hold the Mode-Reset and Learn buttons down at the same time. All three indicator light will flash at the same time.

Step 7: Slowly turn the sensitivity knob counter-clockwise to the minimum position.

Step 8: Turn the sensitivity knob clockwise until all three indicator lights flash at least six times.

Test the Sensitivity:

Step 1: Press and hold the Mode-Reset button down.

Step 2: The indicator lights will begin to cycle. Release the button when the yellow light is illuminated.

Step 3: Move at least 10 feet away from the door and wait until the flap locks.

Step 4: Slowly walk back towards the door. When the key is in range, about 2 feet away, the door will unlock.

FAQ

Will I need additional extension tunnels for installing my large smartdoor into a drywall or brick wall?

It depends on how thick the drywall construction or brick installation is. If it is more than then 2" thick, then you will need additional wall entry frames along with the traditional framing that already comes with the door.

How can I make sure that my pet will fit the pet door?

First, follow our pet measurement guide to figure out if your pet needs a small to extra-large pet door. To double-check you have the right flap size, cut a hole into a piece of cardboard, and make the cut-out size the same as the flap dimensions.
