Step 1 Choose Pet Door Placement

  • Before installation, choose where to place the pet door. The pet door can be placed in the left, center or right side of the door.
  • If there are door panels in the door, align and install your pet door with a panel for easiest installation.

Step 2 Mark Pet Height

  • It is important to measure the placement on the door specifically for your pet’s height. If there are multiple pets, measure to the largest pet.
  • Mark the shoulder height of your pet with a pencil on the chosen door side.
  • Use a level to draw a vertical line through the shoulder height line.

Step 3 Prepare Door

  • Remove the door from hinges using the flat-head screwdriver and hammer.
  • Place the door on a raised level surface, such as a pair of saw horses.

Step 4 Prepare Cutout Template

  • Cut the template to the correct size according to the pet door.
  • Match the marked lines on the door with the shoulder and center lines on the template.

Step 5 Outline Template

  • Make sure the template is at least three inches from the bottom and sides of the door.
  • Tape the template to the door and trace the template completely. Make sure to trace under the tape to connect the corners.

Step 6 Cut the Opening

  • Drill 3/8 inch holes on the inside corners of the drawn template. Hold the drill steady and straight.
  • Place the jigsaw blade into a corner hole, making sure the blade goes entirely through the door, and cut along the drawn template lines.
  • Continue until an opening is made.

Step 7 Check Frame Fit

  • Place the interior frame into the opening to check the fit.
  • Place the exterior frame under the door while holding the interior frame with one hand.

Step 8 Drill Holes

  • With only the interior frame in the opening, mark the door through the screw holes along the side of the frame.
  • Remove the interior frame and drill ¼ inch holes through the door.

Step 9 Position Frames

  • Place the interior frame with the flap into the cutout on top of the door.
  • Place the exterior frame into the cutout from beneath the door. Ensure the exterior frame fits into the interior frame.
  • Hold both frames in place for the rest of the steps.

Step 10 Insert Screws

  • Insert the nylon screws into the holes in the frame.
  • Make sure the screws go through both frames.
  • Caulk around the exterior frame and inside where the frames meet for extra weatherproofing.

Step 11 Install Hex Nuts

  • Twist the hex nuts on the bottom of each screw. Pull the screw up until the hex nut is flush with the exterior frame.
  • Tighten the screws until a small part of each screw remains on the top of the frame.

Step 12 Tighten Screws

  • Tighten each screw evenly throughout the frame until snug.
  • Overtightening the screws can cause the screw to strip or can bow the frame of the pet door.
  • Cut off the excess screw using wire cutters. A metal file can be used to smooth any rough edges of the screw.
