Questions

Should I choose a single flap or a double flap?

A double flap traps a pocket of still air between the two panels, and that air gap is what does the insulating. If you have real winters, real summers, or a door that faces prevailing wind, the second flap is the difference you will actually feel.

A single flap is easier for a hesitant, small, elderly or recovering pet to push through, and it is the better choice in a mild climate or on an interior opening where insulation is not the point. If you are torn, consider which matters more day to day: the energy bill, or how confidently your pet uses the door.

What size hole do I need to cut?

Every pet door has a hole size that is smaller than the outside of its frame, and different again from the flap opening your pet walks through. The hole size is the one you mark on the door.

You will find it in the size guide on the product page, listed beside the flap and frame dimensions, and the installation instructions include a printable template you can tape in place before cutting. Mark from the template rather than from the frame itself. The frame overlaps the opening by design, so cutting to the frame leaves a hole that is too large to seal.

Will this fit the hole left by my old pet door?

Sometimes, but it is worth checking before you order rather than after. Pet door brands do not share a standard hole size, so a large from one manufacturer is rarely the same opening as a large from another, and a new door that is slightly smaller than the old hole cannot be made to cover it.

Measure the existing hole itself, height and width of the opening in the door or wall, not the frame around it. Compare that against the hole size in the size guide on the product page, which is listed separately from the flap size. If the new hole size is larger you can usually enlarge the opening. If it is smaller, look for a door with a wider frame that will cover the gap.

The PetSafe Microchip Cat Door uses microchip recognition technology to provide selective, keyless entry for your pets while blocking stray animals and wildlife. Compatible with 15-digit microchips and optional collar keys, it offers a secure and energy-efficient solution for cats and very small dogs.

Selective Microchip & Key Access
Capable of programming up to 40 individual pets, the reader recognizes standard 15-digit microchips to grant access automatically upon approach. Four-Way Locking & All-Weather Insulation
A manual four-way lock lets you easily adjust access settings between unlocked, locked, in-only, and out-only modes. Built with energy-efficient weather stripping and dual magnetic seals, the door resists harsh outdoor temperatures ranging from -13°F to 131°F (-25°C to 55°C).
