It is important to measure the placement on the wall specifically for your pet’s height. If there are multiple pets, measure to the largest pet.

Step 1 Mark Pet Height

  • Check for electrical and plumbing fixtures in the wall.
  • Use the stud finder to locate the studs in the wall where the pet door will go. Make a small mark where the studs are.
  • With your pet standing between the stud marks, draw a five inch horizontal line at his shoulder height.

Step 2 Locate the Center Point

  • Locate the center between the two studs and draw a five inch vertical line through the horizontal line marking your pet’s shoulder height.

Step 3 Position the Template

  • Use the cutting template to precisely mark where the pet door will go.
  • Align the lines on the template with the lines on the wall and tape in place.
  • The lines on the wall may need to be extended, depending on the size of the pet door.
  • Use the level to check that the template is square and level.

Step 4 Trace the Template

  • Trace the template with a pencil.
  • Remove the template from the wall.

Step 5 Cut the Opening

  • Follow all safety instructions when using power tools. Be sure to always wear safety glasses.
  • Drill 5/16 inch holes inside the corners of the traced template. Hold the drill steady and straight.
  • Place the jigsaw blade into a corner hole and cut along the drawn template lines. Continue cutting along the template until an opening is created.

Step 6 Check Frame Fit

  • Place the interior frame, side A, into the opening to check the fit.
  • If the hole is too small, re-cut no more than 1/8 inch or file the hole to make it larger.

Step 7 Prepare Exterior

  • Fold the center piece and place it into the interior frame.
  • Place the interior frame with the center piece into the opening.
  • Screw in the drywall screws to temporarily hold the frame in place.

Step 8 Mark Holes

  • Tape the flap up and push the frame back until the center piece is touching the exterior wall.
  • Make sure the center piece is not completely pushed out of the frame.
  • Mark the three holes on the center piece on the exterior wall.
  • Drill through the marks to the exterior of the house.

Step 9 Cut Exterior

  • Line up the template with the three holes drilled on the exterior of the wall, ensure it is straight and carefully trace.
  • Drill inside the corners of the traced template.
  • Place the jigsaw blade into a corner hole, and cut along the drawn template lines. Continue cutting along the template until an opening is created.
  • Place the exterior frame, side B, into the opening to check the fit. If the hole is too small, re-cut or file the hole to make it larger.

Step 10 Attach Interior Frame

  • Use the holes made in step 2 on the interior side as pilot holes and drill 1/2 inch holes.
  • Place the washers on the toggle screws and place through the holes on the A side of the pet door. Twist on the toggle bolts.
  • Place the A side of the pet door into the cut hole and use a flathead screwdriver to tighten the toggle bolts.

Step 11 Attach Exterior Frame

  • Place the B side of pet door into the exterior hole and mark the four holes for the toggle bolts.
  • Drill 1/2 inch holes through the marks.
  • Install the toggle bolts with the washers into the B side of the pet door.
  • Place the B side of the pet door into the cut hole and use a flathead screwdriver to tighten the toggle bolts.
  • Make sure the fit is snug as any gaps could cause a draft or water penetration. Use closed cell foam or silicone caulk in these areas.
  • For siding, place closed cell foam or silicone caulk between the pet door frame and siding.

FAQ

Does the pet safe wall door insulate?

This wall unit is not made for extreme weather conditions. So best in moderate areas.

Can I get a different/clearer flap for the pet safe wall entry?

Flaps are not interchangeable, so the only ones would be the ones with the tint. There are other pet doors, by Ideal, that are similar in price and quality, that do have totally clear flaps.

Does this model have extensions for thicker walls?

There is a tunnel extension for thicker walls that will make this door suitable for walls from 8 1/4" - 12" thick in the Large and Medium. And 8 1/4" - 10 3/4" in the Small.

Does this door lock?

Yes! A locking cover comes with the door that you can slide in from top to bottom, so make sure you have enough room above the pet door. The cover tracks are located on the interior frame.

What is the warranty process?

Warranty claims are fulfilled by the manufacturer, PetSafe, and this unit has a 1 year warranty.

How do I get the tunnel to fit my wall thickness if I am in the range?

The PetSafe wall entry has a telescoping tunnel, which means one side is a little larger and fits over the other frames tunnel. This allows you to expand and contract the tunnel width without having to cut it down.

Where can I get replacement parts?

You can purchase replacement flaps from us. They are for the Freedom series doors, not the classic series. Measure the flap to make sure you are ordering the right size. If you have a very old model of wall entry without screw holes in the top of the flap then you would actually need the Classic Replacements. For other replacements you would need to contact PetSafe.

Will my pet have trouble going through two flaps?

Cats may be intimidated by double flaps, but because there is a tunnel between either flap pets have an easier time using it. For training, you can actually remove one of the flaps and then add it back when they get used to going through. We do recommend the petsafe wall door if you want large and small pets to be able to share.

Does this have side magnets too?

No, there are only bottom magnets and brush weather stripping on the sides so it will not hold up to stronger winds.

I don't want my cat to get outside, is this cat proof?

The pet safe wall door is pretty easy for smaller pets to use, even in the Large size. If you do not want your cat to go through, you would need to look at Electronic pet door options, like the PetSafe Electronic Smart Door.

My friend has a PetSafe Double Flap pet door, what is it?
