This Electronic Dog Door has been Discontinued by the Manufacturer

The Staywell 861 Electronic Dog Door unlocks in response to the signal from an active, battery-powered  infra-red activated collar key worn on the pets collar. Then the pet pushes through. One collar key is included.

This pet door has a number of valuable and unique features:

•   Battery operation ensures that your pet still has access even during a power outage.

•   The two-part design flap seals particularly well.
   

•   There is a 4-way lock.
   

•   This pet door may be used in a non-electronic mode by simply pushing a button. 

The frame is charcoal colored, high-impact resistant plastic and would be fairly heavy for a cat to manage in addition to being scary for the cat as the two parts of the flap tend to bang together. For that reason, we think this is the best choice when you want to let a larger dog out but keep a cat in. We would not recommend using this pet door in a sleeping area because of the noise.

Unlike the original  Staywell 51, this door may be installed in a metal door without interfering with the operation of the electronics.

Self-framing adjustment range is 0" - 2".

An AC adaptor is available as an option to allow plug-in operation with battery back-up. Otherwise, the manufacturer estimates that battery replacement will be roughly once every three months for one dog using the door four times per day.

One seemingly nifty idea is to put the door on a timer via the ac adaptor. Unfortunately, this won't work as the collar key would need to be reprogrammed each time.
