Replacement Parts and Flaps for the Ruff Weather and Protector Series Pet Doors

Ideal Ruff Weather Pet Door

The best option for energy efficiency on a budget! The Ideal Ruff Weather Pet Door has two vinyl flaps, offering greater insulation than just one. In addition they are surrounded by fuzzy weather stripping for extra draft protection!

Features of the Ideal Ruff Weather Pet Door

  • Two flaps, one on the interior and one on the exterior frame boost the energy efficiency.
  • Fuzzy weather stripping along all sides of the flaps to limit drafts.
  • Four sizes to fit all different breeds, and easy to use flap design helps small pets sharing with their larger siblings.
  • Installs in all doors from ¾” to 1 ¾” thick.
  • Extra space between the flaps is created to improve insulation, causing the rugged plastic framing to protrude on both sides of the door about 3”.
  • Solid magnetic strips at the bottoms of the flaps to help keep the flaps closed when not in use.
  • Included locking cover can be used on the inside or outside.
  • A special bundle including a wall kit is available to allow installation in a 2x4 or 2x6 stud wall.

Perfect Time for an Ideal Ruff Weather Pet Door

  • When insulation is a concern while on a budget, the Ruff Weather is a great pet door to install.
  • If you have timid or small pets that might struggle with pushing open a heavier flap, the lightweight design of the see through vinyl flaps in the Ruff Weather are easier to learn.

Good door good price compared to some spendy ones. I have a Dane and a pitbull/Dane and it works just right for both of them.

    5 5 GREAT DOOR!

Great door, keeps weather out and all three of our big dogs including a German Shepherd fit thru it including our chubby shepherd mix. Much better than I expected. You don't have to pay extra to have the double see-thru, flexible doors. I real buy!

  • Love It review by Thomas
    5 5 Love It

This is the largest door I could find and it almost didn't fit my big boy. We love it and we love the 2 flap system for conservation of energy. We had a double door model that we have had for 10 years and the springs kept breaking leaving one of the doors open. We get freezing weather and 120 degree weather and live on the edge of a nature preserve. Consequently we have problems with severe cold and rain or severe heat and creatures that will come into an open door. It took a few days to reteach my babies to use the double flaps but now they are pro's and the weather and the wild creatures stay out! I wish I would have had this door for all of my past babies. I have a 23 pound terrier, a 120 pd great dane and my big boy is 175 and 36inches at his withers. It works famously for all of them!!! thank You so Much!!!

5 4 good seal and sturdy

2 flaps is the way to go to make sure wind/heat/cold stay outside. they are clear and still seem easy for the pets to push through. the frame is a little bulky which doesn't look pretty but it is sturdy and gets the job done

5 5 Oustanding pet door. I replaced my smaller Ruff Weather with the larger one due to my dogs size (Labs)

The installation instructions are great and comes with template for marking your wall/door for cutout. Since I was replacing my smaller door, the large pet door saved me some cutting time. I love the replacement flaps that are available for these. Looks great and extremely functional for large breed dogs. Highly recommend!

  • Had for years!! review by hntnwido
    5 5 Had for years!!

We have had this door for MANY (over thirteen) years. Was used by our boxer for many years and now by our Yorkie. It still stays closed, does not let in outside air, and is in very good condition. We've had it so long, I don't remember if there were installation issues. We installed it through a wall, and my husband is a carpenter so if there were installation issues, he quickly fixed them.

    5 4 HAD TO ADAPT

The door has been great. Put it in about 12 years ago and replaced flaps once. However, the plastic insert to close it didn't pass the Bentley the pitt test!! Bentley loves to chew and get into the house. One slide was shattered and the other chewed. Finally went to a sheet metal place and had the guys make 2 new slides. They work wonderful.

5 5 Our XL Ruff Weather has stood the test of time and dog packs

We have a pack of rescued retrievers and shepherds (6-10 at any time) and in ten years all we have replaced are the flaps (several times). It enables our big dogs of all ages to come and go which is important in the triple digit summers. I never looked into replacing the bottom magnet which came up. I am contemplating the largest size recently to aid the aging pack.

  • Wonderful for Large Breed Dogs! review by GreatDaneOwner
5 5 Wonderful for Large Breed Dogs!

We purchased the "Super Large Ruff Weather" door for our 2 Great Danes. It is absolutely wonderful! We were skeptical about the door being large enough since our puppy is very tall (@ 36" at the withers, 160#s), but it works great! It took a bit of training to get them to get used to the flaps, but it was nothing a pack of lunch meat couldn't handle! All it took was a little encouragement, and they LOVE it now! It keeps the weather out and saves us from effort of opening the door constantly (this was a full time job...believe me!)! The installation went well (pretty easy install) and it looks great. If you have tall or large breed dogs, don't hesitate to purchase this door. You will love it as much as we do!

    5 5 excellent!!!

This door is amazing! It puts the dog doors you buy at lowes to shame! I have foster for a giant breed rescue and I currently have 5 great danes using this door and it's holding up great! I also live in Oklahoma where its windy all the time and my flap on my dog door never blows open anymore and I never get flies coming in my house like I did with my previous door. GET THIS DOOR!!! It's worth every penny!

    5 5 Excellent product

This was the 2nd Ruff Weather doggie door I have had installed. It arrived quickly and in my opinion is the best possible pet door. The double flaps are much more energy efficient. Would definitely recommend this door to other pet owners.

  • do not honor warranty review by ClaraJean
5 3 do not honor warranty

This is a pretty good dog door but in the 9 years I have had it I have had to replace both the door flaps twice and now I have just replaced all the weather stripping on the sides inside and out and both the inside and outside magnet strips. The biggest problem with this is they wanted my receipt which was crazy. After 9 years you think I have that receipt? I do not and they will not honor their warranty. I am comparing this to Craftsman tools, never ever need a receipt at Sears when you return a broken Craftsman tool. Big bunch of hooey if you ask me!! Will never purchase one of Elites products again because of this

    5 5 good door

I purchased this door at Home Depot 5 years ago. Installation was a snap in a steel door. Just follow the instructions and use the template. I have replaced one of the flaps 2 times, but that is understandable given the harsh weather here. I recommend this door.

  • Terrible door review by Shell
    5 1 Terrible door

We obviously read the description wrong and really are unhappy with this door. Unfortunately, I didn't see the door till it was already installed in a very expensive new door we purchased. This door is very thick and to get our dogs to go through it we had to rig it on both sides....with books and bricks. In windy KS there are many nights I have to seal it off because it blows open!

The door is larger than I thought but works great for my big babies and the double flaps are a fantastic idea. Works really well to keep the winds /rain/snow from blowing through on our 4 acres.

  • nice and warm review by Alex
    5 5 nice and warm

I purchased this door last week and it took me 45 min to install on a steel door. A grinder with a cutting disk, 3/8 and 1/2'' drill mesh and a screw driver are all you need. I cannot feel any air leaks with my hand. Took me 2 minutes to show my 4 month old Brittany how to use it. Easy since the flaps are transparent. Just take the required time to draw the pattern for the bolts and door opening before cutting anything. I drilled the holes first and draw the door pattern on each side after that.

We have had the door install for over 10 years. We have high winds so I doubled the flapps on the inside and outside to keep snow out. Dogs have had no problems. KEEP YOUR RECEIPT. The warranty is worthless without it.

  • Dont buy it review by Brownie
    5 1 Dont buy it

I purchased a Ruff Weather dog door at Home Depot. I asbolutely do not recommend buying it. It was a nightmere to install - there is no easy way to line up the bolts with the holes, and most of all there is a design problem - the countersunk bolt hole diameter is SMALLER than the bolt heads which keeps the bolts from engaging into their intended location to secure the dog door to the people door. DONT BUY IT. Btw, I am a handy man and a mechancal engineer so I know what I'm talking about.

  • Super Large Ruff Weather Dog Door review by K9's
5 5 Super Large Ruff Weather Dog Door

We purchased this pet door because the one we had would blow open with the wind. The Ruff Weather door stays closed and does not let the cold or heat in.

One of our working K9's sustained a torn ACL and needed the large door for ease of exit and entry. This door fits the bill. Even our 10 lb Yorkie uses the same door.

Installation is easy and straight forward.

5 5 ideal ruff weather dog door

Im on my second dog door, last one lasted 6 years, until i accidently locked the dog door while my shepherd was out she chewed it up trying to get in for 6 hours, I am very happy with this product and my dogs love it, installation was extremly easy, but I am a 30 year carpenter but I think most do it yourselfers could handle it it really blocks the cold air very well, however I noticed it came with only one locking panel, I got 2 on my first door, no biggie great door

  • Quality product/Hardwork review by Wizard
    5 4 Quality product/Hardwork

This a good product but requires a great deal of knowledge to install beyond that of a normal homeowner. I used the wall kit and I had to saw and drill through 6"X 12" thick wood beams. Cutting the bolts off to length and restoring the threads is enough to intimidate anyone much less getting the bores and cut out to line up squarely.
I was able to get the job done in 3.5 hours using several power tools and special accessories.

We bought this one to replace the other one that lasted at least 15 years. It is perfect for us and allows our dogs freedom to go in and out. It keeps the drafts out with the magnetic strips. So glad we replaced it and Patio Pacific was very friendly and got the order to us very quickly

The Ideal "Ruff Weather" Pet Door

Installing the Ideal "Ruff Weather" Pet Door

IDEAL "Ruff Weather" or "Protector Series"Dog Door

Detailed Installation Instructions

Graphics showing the installation of Ideal Ruff Weather and Ideal Protector Series Dog Doors

Tools Required for Installation

Hammer and Awl (or Nail) . Drill and 3/8" Drill Bit . Saber Saw . Phillips Screwdriver

    - The die-cut template is located in the center of pet door. Remove screws holding the frame together; lift out template. Center template (width) in middle of door; tape in place. Position the top of the template 2" taller than your pet's shoulder. Important: Under no circumstances should the bottom edge of the rough opening be less than 3" from the bottom edge of the wood door.

    - With template taped in place, use a pencil to draw around the inside edge of template onto door. Use a nail or awl to mark inside edge corner holes (as indicated) and outer hardware holes.

    - Drill four 3/8" diameter inside edge corner holes. Next: Drill the eight 3/8" diameter outer door hardware holes.

    - Begin with one of the inside edge corner holes. Next: Using a saber saw, cut along inside edge pencil line.

    - Insert outer frame (A) into opening from exterior side (frame must be flush with door surface). Place inner frame (B) into opening from inside door and hold in place. Install screws (C) and tighten until snug. Do not over-tighten.

Slide cover into guide channels located on both sides of pet door opening. Lock inside slide (D) with Shurelock TM red tab located on door's upper left side.

The Ideal Ruff Weather can be installed in all doors with thickness between 3/4" - 1 3/4". For glass doors, you may need a glazier to help you, since you can't cut dual pane or tempered units. If you have an overhanging garage door, the flap may warp over-time if it is left horizontal for too long. Also the since the frame does stick out further than most you want to make sure that you have enough clearance when the door is raised.

The ruff weather pet door with telescoping frame is designed to be installed on a flat surface, they can be installed on an irregular surface as long as the material is 3/4" - 1 3/4" thick. You can fill in the gaps with battens or shims from your local hardware store. Add caulk to fill in the remaining space to seal in the dog door.

Yes, here is the Ruff Weather for Walls, which accommodates 2x4 and 2x6 stud walls (4 3/4" - 5 1/4" or 6 3/4"-7 1/4").

This door does stay closed relatively well due to the double flaps, as this is an economical all weather pet door. It is a great affordable winter dog door option for those who live in a moderate to harsh climate. If the winds get too strong, it comes with a locking cover that can be used to close off the pet door.

The frame on the ruff weather dog door is a pretty bulky plastic that sticks out about 3".

Yes the ruff weather slide in locking cover is included. It is made out of ABS plastic, and you can put it on the inside or the outside.

The flaps aren't interchangeable so even if you have another model of Ideal door they won't work. So for instance a x large ruff weather door flap won't fit a x large original door.

Yes, you can get a second one for the outside directly from Ideal.

No this door will have a different rough opening dimension than other Ideal models.

Yes, the flaps are light enough for smaller pets to use. You should get a size tall enough for your tallest pet to use while installing it low enough for your shortest pet to step over.

We recommend that you use this measurement guide to help you measure your pet.

You would not be able to remove or add magnets to the door. However for training you could tape down the magnet bar on the frame so that it did not attract to the bar on the flap, this would decrease the magnet strength.

The frame is a light grey plastic, however it can be painted with the proper prepping and correct type of paint.

They are tinted, however very transparent so you can see through them easily.

They are identical in size, but the all weather plastic frame dog door was more of a cream color.

The ruff weather dog door parts can be found here Ideal Ruff Weather replacement flaps. They are sold individually so if you would like to replace both flaps, change the quantity to 2.

The ruff weather slide in covers can be purchased directly from the manufacturer Ideal Pet Products.

This is the most economical of the double flap pet doors, so it isn't recommended if you experience really harsh winter weather.
