Questions

Will this work with a retractable, hinged or security screen door?

It depends which one. A conventional sliding screen in a track is the straightforward case. A hinged screen door that swings can usually take a screen mounted pet door, since the frame is rigid enough to carry it.

A retractable screen cannot, because it rolls into a cassette and nothing can be fixed to it. Security screens are the other exception. The mesh is structural, and cutting it compromises the security function, so those need a pet door designed for the product or fitted by the manufacturer. [CONFIRM: whether we supply any security screen compatible unit.]

Can I still use my sliding screen door with a patio panel installed?

Usually yes, and this is the most common worry about patio panels. The panel occupies part of the door track, and your sliding glass door then closes against it instead of against the jamb, but the screen runs in its own separate track.

What varies is how close the screen comes to the panel. On some doors the screen meets the panel directly and closes against it. On others there is enough distance between the tracks that the screen still slides all the way to the sliding door frame, which leaves a gap between the screen and the panel. If you end up with a gap, a draft stopper fitted in that space closes it off and keeps drafts and insects from getting through. Tell us your door configuration and we can tell you which situation you are likely to be in.

Can a pet door be installed in a screen door?

Yes. There are pet doors made specifically to mount into screen material, and they are a different product from the panels that go into a sliding door track.

A screen is not structural, so a pet door mounted in one is supported by the screen frame and by the door itself. That is why screen mounted doors are made light, and why a large dog pushing through a lightweight screen frame can rack it over time. For a big dog, a stabilizer bar or a different install location is usually the better answer.
