Don't know which flap size to get? Here is a measurement guide to help you out

After you make the basic pet door choices--flap size, single vs double flap and frame color--you will have
an opportunity to make other product selections. These include:

  • Locking Cover Load Direction (to accommodate obstructions)
  • Separate Inside Frame Color Choice (to match the inside of your home)

Also, these same pet doors are available in custom dimensions at Hale Custom Dimension for Doors.

Hale Pet Door for Doors

The Hale Pet Door for doors is constructed with quality and care in the USA. One of these pet doors can last many years with regular use, as the frame is built from strong aluminum that can withstand the elements. You can install them in any door that is between ¾” and 2” thick!

Features of the Hale Door Mount

  • Clear vinyl flaps, offered in single or double options. The more weather resistant dual flap design adds the additional protection of a flap on the interior frame.
  • Sleek aluminum frame comes in four different colors, with the option of customizing the inside frame allowing you to mix and match.
  • Magnets around the edges of the flap(s), number varies between sizes. Strength of magnets is easily adjustable.
  • Flap is surrounded by ½” fuzzy nylon weather stripping to limit drafts.
  • Fits doors 1 9/32” to 2” thick, however they include a build out for thinner doors down to ¾”.
  • Locking cover is extremely shock and impact resistant, secured with a steel pin lock.
  • 5 year limited warranty.

Perfect Time for a Hale Pet Door

  • Small or timid pets have an easier time learning to use a Hale due to ease of opening the flap.
  • Large pets sharing a pet door with a smaller pet, or a dog and a cat, can have an easier time than with other flaps that may be heavier or harder to push through.
  • If you are worried about a bulky pet door frame standing out in your home, the slim design of the Hale's frame is the perfect solution. The multiple color possibilities make it easier to match your interior and exterior color schemes.
  • If you need a custom sized pet door to fit a specific space or existing opening, you can order a custom sized Hale pet door as well!
  • If you love a stylish product that is also built to last, the Hale Pet Door is perfect for you!

  • The Best Dog Door review by Aaron
5 5 The Best Dog Door

We've tried several dog doors to deal with extreme temperatures and a picky pit bull. Our first door was a single vinyl flap (not enough insulation). Our second door was an expensive model from a competitor that had a hard, inflexible, dual-pane Lexan flap (our dog would sometimes catch her tail in it when it closed and it made her afraid to go outside). We finally found the double-flap Hale door, which combines the best qualities of a flexible vinyl flap with the insulative of an inflexible dual-pane door. As an added bonus, the magnets are strong and the door always closes as it should, and it is nice how the mounting screws are hidden inside the slim frame – much better aesthetics than others. The security insert is also easier to use than our previous door’s four fastening screws, and the heavy acrylic insert feels as secure and makes less noise than aluminum. I wish we'd found the Hale door sooner!

  • Wonderful for now. Need to wait a year or more to see if it continues to rate high. review by Jeanmarie
5 4 Wonderful for now. Need to wait a year or more to see if it continues to rate high.

It installed quite quickly and easily over the old one. Just praying that it lasts longer than the old one. So much sun and we have 2 large dogs that run in and out quickly all the time left the other one, single flap, curling and gapping and finally just snapping off from the top. Hopefully this one, a double flap will last longer, possibly having the first flap begin to curl but keeping the inside flap safe.

    5 2 Don't buy.

They're beautiful but don't last long at all. Magnets fall off and metal clamps on the flaps that engage the magnets, fall off. I've owned two and both fell apart.

5 5 Unbelievably High Quality Pet Door

If they make a better pet door, I’d like to see it. This one is built like a Mack truck, works great, easy to install and looks awesome. The two tone option saved me a bunch of painting, matching inside and out. Always nice I still find such quality available. Thank You. Darrin Davidson, Memphis, TN.

    5 5 Sturdy!!

We bought the Hale double flap door originally years ago. Our Bassadors (think Lab sized dogs on Basssett legs) bounded through it regularly without damage to the frame or flaps. The flap magnets held both flaps closed consistently and there was little - if any - air escape. We flooded during Harvey and so had to replace it. We knew immediately we wanted another Hale. It is worth every cent!

    5 5 Great design & durability

Super sleek design; doesn't look cheap and matches my frames exactly. Vinyl flap is a lot thicker than some of the cheaper brands out there - definitely feels like it can withstand the elements without getting warped. Definitely recommend!

  • Quality You would expect for USA review by Don
5 5 Quality You would expect for USA

I kind of balked at first due to the price of a large pet door, but rethought the risk of cutting into an expensive door and installing something cheap that doesn't fir or seal well.

I am glad I spent the extra money on this door- got a large- It was well built from anodized aluminum and fit perfectly. Took me just 2 hours start to finish to remove door, install and mount door. Quality was evident with the packaging too.

I love the craftsmanship that I expected from a made in USA product. The way it should be!

5 5 Great buy. Durable, tough, attractive, easy to clean, and my pets love the freedom as much as I do.

(4 big to medium fur babies) Tough, attractive, can't live without. I have had my door for 10 plus years. It is a revolving door. My pets are in and out constantly. They do not walk through the door, they hit it in high gear. I live in the middle of 10 acres. I have never had a problem with any other animal coming through my door (this includes rodents). After 10 plus years, my flap is beginning to warp and the brush sealer is wearing down. No problem, I will order replacement parts. Great product. Well worth the money. I bought

5 5 so many sizes looks great

So easy to fit any size pet, especially big and small pets that have to use it. It's a very sleek design, my favorite look compared to the rest of the options. It is pretty pricey but worth it, it's well built and can't imagine the frame breaking or cracking

    5 5 Great!

The Pet Door has been in for maybe 10 years. It is the best
thing we ever did for our pets. When we are gone, no worries....they can go outside into our fenced yard whenever. Sometimes, when I get home from work, they are out on the deck getting a suntan!
It's thick and heavy duty. Our dog and our cat both use it.

    5 5 Long lasting

I purchased this product 14 years ago and it is still in use today. The flap is still clear and flexible. It has held up in the heat (110 degrees) with no problems. I'm putting a second door into the back yard as my 14-year old cat no longer likes all the noise and commotion in the front yard...and I'm tired of being the "cat butler"!

    5 5 Best option

Pet door is excellent. It took some getting used to, but they fly in and out now with little hesitation. The size was very important for my pack of 150LB+ dogs. I don't believe there's a better option than the Extra Large Hale Door I chose. Installation was a breeze, and it looks great as well.

5 5 As good as expected

Pet door has performed as expected. This is not our first Hale indoor-outdoor door. Keep up the good quality. Our glazier installed it in the panel of glass that replaced the original panel between our sunroom and screened porch. Since we used one of your certified installers, Glass Guru in Indianapolis, I assume they had not trouble. The whole project was friggin' expensive, but we love our cats...

  • All sizes use it review by Patricia
5 5 All sizes use it

I love my door but better, my dogs love it. Dogs range in sizes from 10# to 60# all can use it. My original door was purchased for a 157# pot belly pig so I have a big one. Yes the 10#ers and my darling pig used the same door, never a problem. Even the cat sneaks out with no problem.
I’m on my 3rd door for my 3rd house. Flaps hold up extremely well, even with the bigger guys flying thru to enthusiastically greeting company. Thanks for making a great product that I never have to worry about.

  • Difficult to clean review by Jane
    5 5 Difficult to clean

The flap is a little difficult to keep clean and I may eventually need a replacement. The only negative is that it did not come with a liner on the bottom of the door (or more lining on the sides of the door). I made a liner for the base of the frame of the door, as it is hard to clean out the groove. I had someone install the door for me, and he did not have any difficulty. I would not have been able to do it myself.

  • Outstanding review by Chris
    5 5 Outstanding

It has been a year and 1/2 since we installed the pet door. We ended up installing a little higher that I'd planned on because of the configuration of the door, and I worried it would be a problem for our two Shitzu's, especially the 15 year old. But they both learned to use it in one training session.
The quality of the materials is excellent. We live in the northwest where the climate can be damp and a little cool. No drafts or rain through the door. And it has lasted extremely well, with the dogs going in and out many times a day.

This is our second Hale door. We have 2 Springers and a yard with invisible fence. I'm not sure who loves the door more, the dogs or me. They come and go at their leisure. With the new door in a new home, I thought I'd need to give them some training. Not so. They just started using it.
We also find the Hale door to be very well built. The double flaps always snap shut and the only maintenance is an occasional cleaning.

  • High quality doggie door review by Jules
5 5 High quality doggie door

This is the fourth Hale Pet Security door I have purchased since 1996. You pay more for these than for most other pet doors, but the quality is excellent. I have purchased both single-flap and double-flap door styles, in large and medium sizes. The double flap serves as an "air lock" to maintain the desired indoor temperature and keep out the outside cold or heat. The magnets that hold the flaps in place are especially important if you live in area of high wind combined with rain and/or snow. The door lock is secure. My dogs had no trouble learning to use the doors - even my 5 pound Chihuahua figured it out by watching her canine siblings.

5 5 Best Dog Door ever

We are building a new house and wanted a double flap model with good magnets for our large dogs. The Hale Pet Door really fits the bill - very sturdy and closes tightly. The option for removing the locking panel to the side eliminates trying to pull it up over the window trim in the door. Kind of pricey, but should last way longer than those cheaper models that just blow open when there's a good breeze.

  • Worth the price review by 3 whippets
    5 5 Worth the price

Love our Hale double flap dog door! We had it professionally installed (handyman). The double flaps seal well and keep out absolutely all drafts. The dogs have no problem using it. These dog doors are quite expensive compared to other brands you can get more easily at home improvement box stores, but they absolutely are special and worth the cost. We have tall but skinny dogs. These doors have many more size options, including tall, so that to get a door tall enough (and able to be placed fairly low on the door), the dog door is still suitably narrow instead of being a gigantic hole in the people door. Quality materials too.

    5 5 Quality, Durability

We installed ourselves, well my husband did, which took about and hour and a half, Our door is metal exterior, insulative foam core. Bought the single flap since we don't have severe cold weather. We have 3 20+ lb cavapoos and a yellow lab who all successfully go in and out through this door. I had trouble finding the wax they recommend for the edges of the pass through panel so I used Turtle instead. We skipped installing the metal top rail we bought as it didn't seem to provide a real value. 2 months and counting, and I would recommend this Hale pet door. You can find less expensive, but it seems the quality warrants the price here.

    5 5 Excellent product

I bought this door to replace a one-flap dog door in our walkout basement. This new door with the double flaps seals beautifully and keeps out both rain and wind, even when the wind blows hard. The frame is a very sturdy aluminum construction and will last for many years. This door was double the price of many others we considered, but its solid construction and good seal are worth every penny.

  • LOVE OUR DOOR review by Happy in Oklahoma!

We bought the double flap door 3.5 years ago and are completely satisfied. We have two large dogs that are in and out all day. The quality is great and it is holding up wonderfully. We had the door for the sash window from Petdoors, com at our previous home and that too held up great, so when we bought a new home and had a different dog door need we returned to your site.

We have very windy weather and the magnets hold the flaps shut through all that. Everytime I clean the flaps I am reminded what a great purchase this has been.

Thank you for your quality products!

    5 4 hale pet door

Good quality door. It needs pre drilled holes as I broke the bit sent with the door trying to drill thru the metal. I had to get a man to drill it for me with a new bit. Door is solid and good construction. the clear plastic panels are stiff and heavy which took my yorkie over a month of encouragement and training to get her use to a heavier flaps with tighter securing magnets. I told her "push " so much she thinks it is a command to go outside. Now she uses it regularly. it was work but worth it in the end.

  • Love this dual flap door! review by Mary
5 5 Love this dual flap door!

Bought and installed this two flap door about six years ago for our American Foxhound. It cost a bit more, but has been worth every penny. My dog has been bounding in and out of it for years, and neither flap has ever broken or torn. Magnets still hold. The dual flaps mostly keep out the cold, and we live in CT. I clean it twice a year because she pushes it with her nose and it gets all doggie booger snotty. It cleans up looking just like the day we first installed it. The clear flaps even let light into the darkish little hallway.

You are to be congratulated on this superior product. Sorry it
took me so long to say so.

    5 5 Absolutely fabulous

Can't say how pleased I am with my purchase, I was desperate to find a door that would work and last, I have two Chihuahuas and a Great Dane who have no problems at all with their new door, and it keeps wind and rain out, (we are waiting for snow :) and we were getting desperate to find a pet door that would quite simply do as it says on the box! Nothing like it that I could find locally so I have had to travel across the pond but no regrets as IT works whoopee.

Step 1 Before installation, ensure that you have the proper size pet door for your cat or dog. If in doubt, it may be better to choose a larger size. It can be dangerous for your pet to use a too small pet door. A general rule is to install the pet door so that the height of the flap is at least as height as the top of your pet at the withers.  If you have a short pet as well, be sure he won't have too high a 'step-over'.

Step 2  Review the large illustration of the pet door at the end of the instructions and familiarize yourself with the various components.

Step 3  Be sure you received all parts that should have been included.

A Complete Kit Contains

Hale Pet Door™  for Door Installation
Locking Cover
5/8” #6 Phillips Head Screws
7/64” drill bit
Optional Raincap

The tools required may differ depending upon the type of door you are installing in.  You will need a drill to start the rough cut out and also to drill the screw holes, A saw will be required to finish cutting out the rough opening and a phillips head screwdriver for the screws.

Step 4  Decide where to place your pet door.  A good idea is to make sure that there are no knobs or other obstructions above the pet door that could interfere with the security cover.

Second, be sure that the rough opening will be at least four inches from the bottom and from the side of the 'people' door.  This will maintain the integrity of the door.  (This measurement may vary depending on the size and type of door being used.)

Step 5  Use drop cloths on both sides of the door to ease cleanup.

Step 6  Mary the installation area using a level for accuracy. Use masking tape to record the placement before drilling.

Hale Pet Door Mark Door for cutting Graphic The first step in installing pet doors is measuring your pet's height

Measure and mark all four sides before sawing.  Use masking tape to mark the rectangle. Use the following dimensions to get the correct size rough opening for your size door.

Small7 3/8" x 9 3/8"
Small Medium8 1/2" x 11 1/2"

Level opening of your door before drilling to make ensure proper function
Make sure the opening is square and level before drilling.  This will help ensure that the pet door operates correctly.

Step 7 For Wood Doors  Drill out two corners diagonal from each other (top left and bottom right OR top right and bottom left).  using  a 7/8” wood bit or a 5/16” steel bit.  If you use the 5/16” drill bit, drill three holes close together and wiggle the bit until you have connected the three holes.  This procedure will allow you enough room to fit a jig saw blade into the holes.

Drill out two corners of your marked opening, make sure to stay on the lines you made

Drill your initial holes carefully and take care not to go outside your marked opening.  You may wish to use a level on the drill bit to make sure that both the inside and outside edges of the rough opening are correctly aligned.

Next step is to drill bit holes in the people door to get your rough cut opened

After the holes are connected, use a reciprocating saw, scroll saw or jig saw  to cut out the opening along the lines you've marked. Using a saw, cut the entire opening in your door along the marked lines

Step 7 for Metal Doors  If  you have a drill and reciprocating saw, follow the above directions for wood doors, using a 14 tooth / inch blade on the reciprocating saw.   Otherwise, drill the four corners and use a chisel at the corners to start the hole.  Finish the rough opening cut with a power saber saw.  Be careful that the saw blade does not dent the other side of the door while you cut. The Hale Pet Door™ “door” model is completely self-framing so there is no need to 'frame out' the inside of the door.

The pet door frame with the locking cover should be on the inside of the houseStep 8  Separate the pet door frame into two halves and place the side with the locking cover to the inside.   Remove the locking cover.  Before installing the pet door into the rough opening,  loosen the screws holding the deadbolt lock.  Back them out a few turns, otherwise they may protrude enough to keep the corner of the pet door off the people door leaving a gap.

Step 9  Place the inside frame of the pet door into the opening in the door.  Place the outside frame of the pet door into the other side of the door and let the pet door frame telescope together.  Squeeze the two sides of the pet doors frame together tightly.  You may hold them together with carpenter's clamps as you proceed.

Before drilling your frames in, test fit the doggy door to make sure it is the right size

Test fit the pet door prior to drilling
any screw holes.

Rain caps are optional for Hale dog doors, they install on the outer frame facing the environment

Visual of a rain cap going on your outside frame for weatherOptional Step  If you elected to use the rain cap for your petdoor installation, attach it to the outer frame as shown.  It will simply hook onto the top of the outer frame.  Then telescope the frames together as stated in Step 9.

Step 10  Using the pre-drilled pilot holes in the pet door frame and the supplied drill bit, drill one hole through the inside edge of the outside frame at the bottom.  Insert and loosely tighten one screw. Make sure the door is level and adjust if needed.  When door is level, tighten the inserted screw and repeat drilling and inserting the rest of the screws in the pet door frame.  Also, retighten the screws that hold the pin bolt lock in place.

Loosely screw your pet frame into the door holes, making sure it is level before completely installing

Step 11  Once the pet door is installed you can fill any gaps or seal the edges with caulking if desired.  Do not caulk the bottom of the inside or outside frame.  It is a good idea to place blue painter's tape around the three sides of the pet door that you will be caulking.  After you apply the caulking and smooth it, you can remove the tape for a clean edge and no mess on your people door.  See the instructions under “raised panel doors” for dealing with gaps and using caulking backer rod.

If you are installing the dog door on a paneled door you may need to caulk any gaps

Your locking cover is ready to slide down the frame and lock with its pin lockStep 12:   The Starboard® cover will slide easily into place in the built in frame and can be easily locked and unlocked with the positive action pin bolt lock.   (NOTE: The photo to the right shows the cover in place with the protective covering still on the Lexan cover (Lexan is now discontinued).  Starboard covers do not need this covering as they are not prone to scratching.)

Step 13: Remove the drop cloths and clean up the area.  We recommend cleaning the frame and flaps of the pet door also.  Use soap and water or glass cleaner without ammonia.

Use simple soap and water to clean your frame and pet door flaps without ammonia

You may also adjust the magnets in the frame if necessary.  They can either be raised or lowered so the flaps seal but swing freely.  Adjust the magnets upward by twisting a flat headed screwdriver below the magnet between the magnet and the frame.  Adjust the magnets downward by tapping lightly with the handle of your screwdriver.  NEVER hit a magnet hard with a hammer as this may bend the legs of the magnet and cause it to eventually fall out of the door track.

Use a flat head screwdriver to adjust magnets, you can make it easier or harder for pets to enter

You have now completed the installation of your new Hale Pet Door™.  We hope you and your pet enjoy the new investment you have made in your home!

Notes for Various Types of Doors

Raised panel doors
If you have panel doors, take note of the best options to install in order to maintain the structure of your door

  • Two types of  raised panel door are illustrated above. A true raised panel door will be built of solid wood, and the panels will be separate pieces of wood contained in the body of the door. This type of door is common on older homes, but in newer homes you are more likely to find doors whose surfaces have been molded to look like a raised panel door.

  • Carefully consider placement of your pet door before cutting the rough opening.   Ideally, the pet door should be either centered on the door or centered on a panel. If the door is a true raised panel door, centering the pet door on the people door is not a good idea. Cutting out the vertical support will structurally weaken the door.

  • Once you have determined where to place the door, cut out the rough opening and install the pet door as described above.

  • There should be gaps that need to be filled between the pet door and the door where the grooves from the raised panel are.

  • Put blue masking tape on the door so that the bottom of the tape is even with the top of the pet door. Fill the gaps with "caulking backer rod". Make sure your filler does not come up to the edge of the pet door frame.

  • Fill the gap with caulk of an appropriate type and color. Smooth the caulk with a putty knife or a razor blade. Remove the blue tape carefully. Clean up and you are finished.

Cross Hatch doors

Cross hatch doors can accept doggy door installations, but will need help filling in gapsSolid wood doors need paddle bits to drill into

Typical crosshatch door

To drill starter holes through a solid wood door, use a 7/8" paddle bit and drill almost all the way through the door. Go to the other side of the door and finish the hole. This will prevent splintering wood.

  • A crosshatch door, also called a farmhouse door, usually has a window in the upper half. The lower half is constructed very much like a raised panel door, but the panels are usually sunken in compared to the rest of the door. These doors are almost always solid wood. Be very careful when drilling your starter holes in wood. If you push too hard the wood may splinter.

  • Installation of the pet door is about the same as with any other door. The difficulty is filling in the gaps. Depending on how deep the gap is, there are several different ways to approach this. If the gap is not very deep, caulking backer rod and caulk will work nicely. If the gap is deep you may want to consider filling with pieces of wood. This will require a hacksaw, miter box, and careful measuring.

Hollow Core Doors

  • If you are installing in a hollow core door, don’t cut your rough opening with a reciprocating saw if you can avoid it. It tends to shake the door surface violently, sometimes separating it from the interior “honeycomb”. Use a circular saw and diamond blade. It makes a clean, easy cut.

Fiberglass Doors

  • Fiberglass doors can be cut with a reciprocating saw or a circular saw with a diamond blade but be sure to wear a good dust mask!   You do not want to be inhaling fiberglass.

Wood Doors

  • Cut wood doors with a reciprocating saw. Do not try to use the circular saw. The diamond blade will simply scorch the wood, barely cutting it, and a wood blade will grab the wood and take off, which will be dangerously hard to control.

Steel Skin Doors

  • Steel skin doors are made of a foam core covered with thin steel skin. If the pet door you are installing is small, (medium or smaller), you can cut the rough opening with a diamond blade and clean up the corners with a reciprocating saw. If the pet door is larger than a medium, sink the diamond blade into the door in one spot on all four sides of the rough opening. This creates four grooves you can get a reciprocating saw blade into. Use a fine blade on the reciprocating saw. (18-tooth per inch at a minimum.)

The Hale pet door offers a flexible, vinyl flap while other weather proof models choose harder flap material, such as the freedom pet pass pet door with a canvas flap. These vinyl flaps are thicker than standard, offering a greater resistance to extreme weather.

For a Hale pet door single flap, you should select the outside flap.

Yes! You can attach and remove magnets. Removing magnets makes it easier for smaller pets to push through. With a screwdriver head, you can push the magnets off the flap. Adding magnets is a great way to combat outside weather as well. You can purchase additional magnets and strikes here.

Hale gives you options on how your locking cover opens based on the unique locations your door will be in. These options are included in case there is a lip above your frame that would stop your locking cover from sliding up. You can open your cover left or right depending on other obstructions on either side of the installation location.

The hale door for doors does not come with a full tunnel for the wall so you would need to purchase the hale wall mount. With that the tunnel sleeve is made of aluminum, and will either be 10" or 16" in length. Once you measure the exact length of your wall, you will then have to cut the aluminum with metal snips according to size. You can discard the extra material left over.

Hale Replacement Flaps can be bought here . These flaps do not have logo's on them, so it would be best to measure the flaps to make sure the correct size is ordered.

Double flap mounts increase resistance to extreme weather. These are great options for blazing summer and snowy winters. While a Hale single flap can do the job of some double flap models, the additional vinyl can safeguard from wind and single digit temperatures.

Yes; it comes in Satin, Arizona Beige (Tan), White, and Bronze. See pictures above for color samples.

Hale can make a pet door with two different color frames. So you can get the door to match your interior and exterior decor.

If you want a locking cover on both sides, that would be a special order. Please let us know beforehand if you want to make that happen. Once you have the door in your home, an additional locking cover cannot be added the other side. The exterior locking cover can also only be manufactured to open from the left or right.

Cats should be able to push through a double flap mount. It helps there will be a tunnel, since the two flaps will not be back to back so your cat will only go through one flap at a time. If it is difficult, you can also remove some magnets to lessen the resistance.

Yes! All you would have to do is purchase a replacement flap kit, which comes with everything you need.

Yes, this is a really good choice for that because if there is anything (like a sill above it sticking out) then you can choose one of the side load locking cover options.

No, that is made by a different manufacturer and parts and dimensions are not the same.
