Step 1: Review and Measure
- Carefully read this listing and estimate your glass pane and pet’s measurements to ensure this pet door fits your needs.
- Short-legged pets may struggle with the step-over height, as the pet door sits 3 3/4" above the ground.

Step 2: Hire a Glazier for Accurate Measurements
- Have a professional glazier measure the width, height, and thickness of your glass pane.
- The glazier should review our detailed instructions and determine if you have Low-E, clear, or tinted glass.
- They can also assist you with completing the order form.
Important: Accurate measurements are essential since every unit is custom-made and cannot be returned or refunded.
Warning for Therma-Tru Doors: If you have a Therma-Tru brand sliding glass door, you must hire a specialized glazier. Be sure your door is compatible before purchasing.
Step 3: Place Your Order Online
- Choose your glass size from the menu: Standard (up to 34" wide x 76" tall) or Oversize (up to 34" wide x 92" tall)
- Add any additional options, such as an extra step-over, to your cart.
- After checkout, you’ll receive an order confirmation email with an orange “Finish Your Order” button. Use this to submit your glazier’s exact measurements with our order form.
Step 4: Complete the Order Form
- Complete the order for as clearly as possible. If possible, have a glazier assist you.
- Shipping Address: standard size glass ships to residential addresses while over gize glass requires a business (non-residential) shipping address.
- Glass Details: Enter the Quantity and complete the Glass Information section with your glazier’s measurements. Select your Glass Thickness, Glass Width and Height (actual glass size, not visible area), and Glass Type.
Minimum Glass Size Requirement: Add 6” to your flap’s width and 7” to its height.
- Customizations: Select your Flap Size, Frame Color, Additional Step-Over Height, and Pet Door Opening Placement.
- Pet Door Positioning: If your sliding door slides inside the fixed panel, the pet door goes on the sliding glass. If it slides outside the fixed panel, the pet door goes on the fixed glass.
- Submit the Form: Email your completed order form to customerservice@petdoors.com. Your order will be on hold until we receive this form. Please refer to our full set of instructions.
Step 5: Installation
- Once your door arrives, schedule the same glazier who took your measurements to install it.
- They will remove the old glass and insert the new pet door unit into your sliding door frame.
Tip: Keep your original glass panel for future use. Store it in the box your new pet door arrived in.

No, when you purchase a “Through the Glass” dog door, it comes with the glass panel only. The framing of the sliding door is NOT included in the purchase. Since this unit will replace the current glass inside your framing, there will be an installation process you or a hired professional will need to follow as well as filling out the appropriate order form.

What exactly comes with an In the Glass purchase? Only one piece is glass is purchased at a time, as this is not a full door pet door unit, just the glass part. This piece of glass will be installed into your patio frame. What makes this option great is the pet door that comes installed in the glass. Either your slider or stationary glass will be replaced with an identical piece of glass with a pet door flap and frame installed. We do not carry the full patio doors with dog door already built in. |
What does it mean by standard and oversize glass size? Standard Glass Size has a square inch range of 34" x 76" or smaller. Oversized Glass Size would be any range over 34" x 76" and up to 46" x 92". Both work with Single or Dual-Pane Tempered Glass. |
Can this be used for a dog door for a glass panel door? Yep! But only if it is one solid pane. If you have individual panes and just need to replace one or two of those, you would want to use the Hale Custom Dimension Door. |
When will I get the email asking for my dimensions? As soon as you place your order, an email will be sent asking for the custom dimensions of your glass. |
What is the minimum step-over? The minimum step-over on the "Through the Glass" units is 3 3/4" plus however tall the frame of the sliding door is. If your frame is 2” tall, then the minimum step-over would be 5-¾”. What step-over does this come with already? Originally, there is a 3 3/4" step-over. Plus, however tall your slider frame is from the floor. You can purchase a custom 2" or 4" step-over to accommodate your pet's size. Make sure the top of the frame will be at least an inch above their shoulder with or without a step-over. |
Why does the price jump so much when I change pet door sizes? "Through the Glass" units can be pretty expensive because you're getting a custom unit made entirely to your specifications. These items can get expensive because of the quality you are purchasing. You are paying for the quality of materials in the glass, metal, and flap; which will save you on AC/heating bills and require less in replacement parts. |
What is Low-e coating? It stands for Low-emissivity coating. Low-e is applied to the inside of the glass to cut back on the heat and cold transfer. Low outside temperatures combined with moist, warm air inside the house can result in condensation on the inside of any glass window, including that in a patio door. Dual-pane, low-e glass can greatly reduce or eliminate this problem. This feature is especially important in cold climates. |
What are the benefits to the "Through the Glass" units?
The "Through the Glass" units do not take up space for you to walk through like a patio panel pet door would. This is a huge benefit if you have a smaller retrofit slider, as now you don’t have to worry about trying to squeeze through sideways. Additionally, the "Through the Glass" doggie doors utilize your existing lock, so you will not have to worry about how to go about securing your home.

How long does it take to get the "Through the Glass" model? It takes about 3-4 weeks for these types of pet doors to be manufactured. Transit time is about 1-5 business days as it ships from the West Coast. Can you change the flap in the glass units if it wears out? Yes, you can purchase replacement Endura Flaps® on the website, it might sound strange, but you will need to purchase the one for the Door/Wall Mount since that includes the hole plugs. Can I lock the pet door when I don't want my dog to use it? The flap itself will be coming with a locking cover. This cover slides on the track of the frame to securely prevent access. |
