            • Installing a cat door is pretty simple if you follow the guidelines properly and use the right tools. But then again, the effort you put into installing a cat door largely depends on the location you choose for it. For instance, it is relatively easy to install a cat door in an interior or exterior door. Meanwhile, the best through wall cat door brands would be the same as the more weatherproof dog doors, just get it in the small size.

            • What is the difference between a cat door and a dog door?
            • Some cats can use a dog door, but there are other doors more suited for cats. The most distinguishing feature that makes specialized cat doors different from standard pet doors is their rigid flaps. Most advertised cat doors will have a clear polycarbonate or plastic flap. They are designed this way for both comfort and usability. It also prevents cats from clawing at the flap. Other features that cat doors often come with include fuzzy weather-stripping-like material on the lining of the flap, hand locks, and magnetic closure.

            • How will the cat door prevent other animals from entering my home?
            • To keep out the neighborhood raccoons, who can usually figure out how to use their claws to pull the flap out towards them and enter your home, you need a special kind of electronic pet door. Many electronic cat doors and microchip cat flaps give you complete control of who enters your home. Check out how to install a cat door in a window.

              • Can we do this?

I have an internal door from house to “sun room (unheated with jalousie windows on three sides. tee hee)”. Home built in 1956. There are 4 panes of glass in the door and a solid piece of wood at the bottom. Glass panes are 23.5 in X 12 inches. Single pane. I want to take out the bottom glass pane and insert a cat door. Is this even possible???

              • Hi Dana,

Microchip pet doors can be programmed to scan for the unique microchip embedded in your cat. This means that they will only unlock when they scan your cat’s specific microchip number.

Please feel free to contact us at customerservice@petdoors.com or 1-800-826-2871 if you have any questions!

              • Hi Bob,

The Cat Mate Electronic Cat Door (https://www.petdoors.com/products/catmate-electronic) is a great electronic option that can install into a metal garage door. This door comes with a magnetic collar key that unlocks the flap so that only your cat can enter.

We also carry the PetSafe Microchip Cat Door (https://www.petdoors.com/products/petsafe-microchip-cat-door) which scans for your cat’s embedded microchip to unlock the flap. However, this door will require a separate adapter that can be purchased directly from PetSafe to install in a metal garage door.

Please feel free to contact us at customerservice@petdoors.com or 1-800-826-2871 if you have any questions!

                Happy holidays!

              • I’m looking for a cat door that would fit on a metal garage door. I would also be interested in a cat door that ONLY my cats can go and come. I saw that was activated by a microchip. Are there other options to this ?

                Bob Fischer
              • I have a 95"high sliding door in a rental unit. I have 2 cats that love the patio. I would love access to
the screened second floor patio so they can come and go especially at night.

                Joyce Pacifico
              • How does the microchip door know if it’s the right cat coming inside the house?

                Dana Erskine
